[James Culbertson] “Isn’t “stagnant code” a bit of an exaggeration? I’m still making good money very efficiently using FCPX even without the hoped for upgrades.”
And some people are making good money cutting with FCP7. And others are using old versions of Avid so they can still use ScriptSync. Both are situations where “stagnant code” and “still making money” are not mutually exclusive; but that doesn’t change the fact that they are examples of “stagnant code.” FCPX is not quite in the same category but this mini-thread was based on the following quote from Bill Davis:
” … whether you are a proponent of FCP X or not, it’s hard to argue that they are at least trying to advance editing tools and techniques … but I still think it’s great that at least one team is still investing money into fresh NLE thinking.”
The question is whether Apple is STILL putting money, and therefore effort, into innovating with FCPX or are they coasting on the innovations they made five years ago.
Stay tuned.

How much money they are still investing is the question of the moment.

September 24, 2016 at 4:41 pm in reply to: Audio playback sync issues when editing audio files[Oliver Peters] “It appears that this issue is related to the BMD Decklink card”
That makes sense, I’m using a Decklink card as well. I wonder if I switched to an aja or other video output card if that would eliminate the problem?
[Oliver Peters] “I had my Premiere Pro audio prefs set to use Adobe Desktop for audio playback. I presume that this sends the audio out through the OS X system and then from there to the card. So you still hear audio output via the BMD card. When I had switched this to Blackmagic Playback in the past to match the video, I got very wonky results.”
I’ve always had the audio on Blackmagic out, so if that’s the solution, I’m still in trouble.

[Bill Davis] “And what about stupid Tiffany!”
OK, I give up, what about Tiffany? Do they have patents on color lamps? I’m asking in all honesty here, I don’t know what your alluding to.

You’ve got to be kidding. Please tell me this is a joke. How do you “suck up” solar energy? With a photon vacuum cleaner?

September 23, 2016 at 12:55 pm in reply to: Audio playback sync issues when editing audio files[Oliver Peters] ” As I do a bit of audio editing, the playback of the system starts to go out of sync on the desktop. IOW, not just the video in the viewer (and external monitor), but also the playback position of the timeline itself is out of sync with what I’m hearing. When it’s out of sync, scrubbing is also out when I compare the cursor position, the audio waveform of the clip and what I hear. If I exit Premiere Pro and relaunch, it’s stable for a while and then the same thing again after a bit.”
Happens to me from time to time, but going back at least 3 years so I don’t think it’s OSX or PPro version specific. Tends to happen more when other programs – especially non Adobe like Pages or even Text Editor are open. If it’s real serious try transcoding audio to .AIF – that helps sometimes. Also restart the computer rather than just restart Ppro.

Thanks for posting.
From the article
“Apple will typically offer to repair and replace Macs bought between five and seven years ago. At that point, the hardware becomes “vintage,” and Apple will no longer service it (with exceptions made in accordance with local laws). Products discontinued more than seven years ago are declared “obsolete,” at which point repairs will not be made and parts cannot be ordered.”
So which will come first, a new Mac Pro or the 2020 date of obsolescence?

[Bill Davis] “Seriously, OF course there are types of gigs where any one particular strategy will fail.”
This whole sub-thread started when Joe commented on what he perceived as a shortcoming with FCPX’s implementation of multicam. Then, because you can’t have anybody criticize your little baby, you gave him a “strategy” that only fits a narrow range of “gigs” – and now your all sensitive about it. In Ppro you can do it your way, my way, or anybodies way – there is no compromise necessary, but you can’t acknowledge that so you have to come up with a lot of nonsense.
[Bill Davis] “I’ll change everything I do now, because I’ve finally realized that everyone shoots 14 cameras and follows steaming shaky pots in kitchens whilst clinging to a technique that’s usefull sometimes – but I use it always cuz We X editors are just that dumb.”
I’m sorry your intimidated by the idea of shooting pans in a kitchen — such an elitist thing to do. Would you like my example better if I talked about turds in a toilet bowl shot with 2 iPhones – same result.
[Bill Davis] “Herb, you still have NO experience with X. So keep focused on how it will never do what you want it to do. And for sure keep telling the guys that use it daily – how it works – cuz that’s fun to read”
And you apparently have limited experience with stabilizers and how they work – and how they often don’t work. And the guy that was complaining about how X works wasn’t me – Joe is an X editor. And nothing is more fun to read than you blowing your stack as you try to explain why X editors aren’t really pure enough to comment on the software they use because they don’t have the Bill Davis certificate of sycophancy.

[Robin S. Kurz] “If they needed it, sure. Don’t see why I wouldn’t.”
So every time you’re going to make a multiclip you routinely check each clip and if they have so much as a bump you apply L&L just in case you might need that moment stabilized – are you saying that is your workflow?
Talk about waste – the amount of time wasted in reviewing your clips far exceeds any possible time spent tweaking a PPro multicam for frame size problems.Herb Sevush

[Robin S. Kurz] “Of course the fact that the room I was in whilst trying this was also filled with roughly TWENTY part and full-time Premiere users, all of which were equally stumped, makes that claim that much more hilarious. Thanks for the hearty chuckle.”
Where some see unintuitive complexity others see a useful tool free to deal with complex usage.
As for the issue of dealing with multiple frame sizes:
In the “Create Multicam” dialogue box there is a section labeled “Sequence Preset.” The default is “Automatic” and if left unchanged PPro will use the frame size of the largest sized clip in the group to create it’s multicam source. However you can over-ride the default and choose any frame size and rate you want.
Once your multicam source is created you can open it in a timeline, select any or all tracks and choose either Set or Scale to frame size (more options, more complexity, more choices) for any offending camera angles and all those nasty black bars will go away.
So now you can have any sized source sequence you want and all the tracks within the sequence will be full frame.
As for the 20 premiere users who could not figure this out, I would suggest you hang out with better editors in the future, you will learn more that way.
