Before you decide on any file specs, confer with your print shop about the requirements. Some want CMYK only, others don’t care. It also depends on the quality of the print job (and the costs). The viewing distance is the most important factor – if the typical viewing distance is going to be about 3~1 meters, then 150ppi is more than enough in most cases. That is, unless you expect/want people to read and inspect the book titles on the spines 😉 Then 300ppi is the way to go.
If you have any text convert to vectors. Same for logo work, and so on.
A single layer file at 2.5mx1m@300ppi takes up about 1.3gb of memory. You will run out of memory fast with only 4gb – since ram is inexpensive nowadays, why not upgrade to at least 8gb (or 16gb)?

January 8, 2014 at 1:35 am in reply to: Producing RGB and alpha channels like an existing file (attached)1) click (mac: ctrl->command key) on the rose layer thumbnails. This loads the transparency as a selection.
2) switch to the channels palette
3) click on the second icon from the left at the bottom of the channel palette. This saves the selection as a channel.4a) (optional) to generate a black background, to deselect the active selection, and switch back to the layer palette.
4b) Add a solid color layer (fourth button from the left bottom of layer palette)
4c) drag this layer to the bottom underneath the rose layer
4e) right-mouse click the rose layer (NOT the thumbnail) and choose “Flatten image”.That’s it: you now have the same setup as the other image.

Irfanview will do that for you. It has several options, from auto-executing a slide show off a cd/dvd (on Windows machines), to converting a folder of images to a “real” dvd that will play on any OS with a drive, or even dvd players.

December 7, 2013 at 7:13 am in reply to: PShop animation?: cumulative line drawing, aka “draw on” or “sketch-on”Photoshop is really the wrong software for that job, in my opinion. Even frame by frame animation is a chore in Photoshop compared to most other 2d animation apps. I feel excluding the use of other software is shooting yourself in the foot here, and just making life more difficult that it needs to be. As has been mentioned before me After Effects would be a really simple, quick, and efficient solution.
But anything can be animated by manually drawing the effect frame by frame.
The solution in Photoshop is that you will need a VIDEO layer to be able to draw frame by frame – regular layers will not work, and will only, as you have discovered, copy the same content across the entire animation. When you look up the help for animating layers in the manual it does not seem to mention this directly – because it assumes you would want to animate a layer object, i.e. repositioning it (tweening) or animate the opacity.
1) create a new file (and make sure to create a VIDEO timeline, not a frame by frame one!)
2) go to LAYER–>VIDEO LAYERS–>NEW BLANK VIDEO LAYER
3) now start animating frame by frame. To create that line animation I would probably draw the entire line first and duplicate that to all frames. Then us the eraser to remove the line step by step.

– did you perhaps set the layer blend mode to “dissolve”
– or the brush blend mode to “dissolve”
– or turned on “noise” in the brush palette?/*—————————————————-*/

August 23, 2013 at 12:47 am in reply to: How do I split a picture into chroma and luma?Convert to Lab mode, open the channels, and:
– hide the L channel to show chroma only (a&b)
– hide the a and b channels to display luminance only. This works best if you create a new view window of the same document, and align both windows side by side.
Each window can have its own channel display setup. So, for example, the window on the right can be used to inspect luma and chroma (combined a&b) channels./*—————————————————-*/

Before focusing on WordPress templating, learn both html and css. Then learn the basics of php. It might also be a good idea to familiarize yourself with a couple of html/css frameworks like Foundation and Bootstrap.
Oh, and it will not hurt to teach yourself the basics of Javascript and jQuery.
Then continue on to WordPress. WordPress is built on html, css, Javascript, and php.
For reference books, might I suggest the SitePoint range? Nothing published past the last two year range.
As for an editor to work in: avoid Dreamweaver, and spend some time learning one of the freely downloadable NetBeans, Aptana, Komodo Edit, etc.

Your html code is missing all the required classes to make the foundation grid work at all. Do you have an online version for us to inspect?

This behaviour is caused by the anti-aliasing that Photoshop introduced. One solution is to import your Illustrator artwork with anti-aliasing turned off.
You can then decide to import a second version with anti-aliasing, and put that layer highest in the layer stack.
Another option is to use OLM Smoother (https://www.olm.co.jp/rd/technology/tools/?lang=en) to convert the jaggy artwork into nice anti-aliased lines.
