By the way, I forgot to mention that smart objects’ functionality based on Photoshop-only functions will obviously not work in Photoline. This means a smart object which embeds a RAW file with ACR, or a 3d object, or smart filters: these things are not supported in Photoline.

Photoline can be downloaded from pl32.com, and it will run as a trial. The trial version displays a nag screen with a day counter, and will not save tiff or gif files, I believe. Otherwise, it is fully functional.

To be fair, the photographer’s plan (Photoshop and Lightroom) is quite affordable. $10 a month is not that bad.

Myself, I just do not like to be come a serf in Adobe’s digital Serfdom. So I decided to switch to alternatives years ago.

Anyway, another good alternative is Affinity Photo (together with Affinity Designer). Available for Mac only, and extremely affordable.
    https://affinity.serif.com/en-us/

For digital painting and HDR painting work, Krita is free and open source, and beats the pants out of Photoshop’s painting tools. https://krita.org/

Photoline is the only alternative which deals with 32bpc images, and even open multi-layered EXR files. Arguably the most powerful alternative, and deals blows with Photoshop – some things better in Photoshop, other things better in Photoline. https://www.pl32.com/

Pixelmator is quite okay as well. But lagging behind a bit behind both Photoline and Affinity Photo. It seems to have lost its momentum somewhat since Affinity was introduced in the Mac market.

3d in Photoshop is, in my opinion, not really worth the effort or time. The render engine produces images of questionable quality at ridiculously slow render times compared to any modern render engine – both commercial and free/open source.

And as you say, 3d in Photoshop is awkward to use. I think anyone is far better off learning the basics of a dedicated 3d application. Blender is free, and its Cycles render engine is excellent (and incredibly fast when combined with a good video card).

October 4, 2015 at 6:59 am in reply to: Multiple vector masks in photoshop

It is a real shame Photoshop failed to receive any updates in regards to its layer mask system since… well, since version 4 or 5, or so?

One would expect to be able to add as many layer masks and vector masks as we need by now. Instead, Photoshop users are forced to work-arounds such as the one shown here and awkward clipping masks.

Get a mainboard which supports fast PCIe Gen3x16 slots for your video card, raid controller, and such. The mainboard you chose (gigabyte) does not support any x16 slots at all.

According to the generic PC configuration guide (https://documents.blackmagicdesign.com/DaVinciResolve/DaVinci_Resolve_12_Configuration_Guide_2015-07-27.pdf) you should also be careful about which slots to use. Some must be avoided to prevent overall system performance degradation (page 20). I quote their configuration guide as a general “how-to” for best 4k performance.

I would switch out the one you have currently selected with a mainboard which does support higher bandwidth PCIe lanes.

Also, I would increase the PSU to one with a bit more wattage and quality, although it is a fair PSU quality-wise on the lower end of the PSU market. If you want silent, perhaps consider a higher quality PSU which remains completely silent even at around 400 watts and below which your system will be doing at load I suspect (example: EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G2). More expensive, of course.

Is the file you work on a 16bpc file?

  • Try a different (older) Wacom driver.

Also, Laxy Nezumi can be very helpful. Unfortunately, Photoshop does not offer any built-in smooth stroke control. Even when you do fix the jagged lines issue, when drawing zoomed out on a large high-resolution canvas, Photoshop still has issues with ugly lines.

I have left Photoshop for drawing altogether since more than two years now, and I prefer Krita for digital drawing and painting now (which happens to be free and open source!). https://krita.org/ Give it a chance – you may never want to draw and paint in Photoshop ever again.

I also use Clipstudio, of which the drawing feel is far superior to Photoshop.

What kind of pattern? You forgot to include an example.

  • Try resetting your Photoshop preferences. Hold down while starting up Photoshop.
