I noticed the faster performance as well, Tony, but find it hard to be thrilled about it because it should have been there much earlier. It’s 2015 and I’ve been running on a near-top-of-the-line system and X was laggy when working on 3 min projects with a couple of prores layers. Just inexcusable.

That Apple finally fixed it doesn’t take away from the shamefulness of Apple releasing the last crippled version and leaving users with it for months. I really wonder if Apple can be trusted. Where are the high standards Apple used to have?

I can’t imagine someone editing a complex feature given how sluggish performance currently is. I started to get frustrated with delays and sluggish UI just editing a demo reel.

I agree with the “puff piece” designation.

I assumed that when I was using a 2009 Mac Pro too.

And then I used a 2013 iMac for a while, and didn’t notice it as much…a little but not as much.

Now it seems to be there all the time. I don’t know if the last version or two of FCP X took a step back in terms of performance, but it’s really annoying to invest in Apple’s best equipment and software, and have it all run like a 6 year old set up.

Apple: the company that used to delight, and now more often just disappoints.

And performance improvements with the interface! FCP X’s UI is just plain slow many a time…and i’m not talking about big sprawling projects either.

I have a 6 core 2013 Mac Pro with D500s and 32GB of ram, cutting a 3 minute project using a couple layers of prores 422 footage off of a Thunderbolt 2 8 drive RAID…and the interface is often laggy. Selecting clips, trying to trim them, sometimes skimmer responsiveness, inspector responsiveness (moving in and out of the color corrector, for instance).

I’m surprised this hasn’t been addressed more aggressively by Apple, but letting things fester is generally Apple’s M.O. these days….

Well, Steve, a free market of ideas also means that I’m able to criticize overrated operations officers like Tim Cook when I want….and begin drawing attention to his core failures and talking about getting him replaced if he doesn’t improve.

By the way, I see a very strong correlation between his social focus and Apple’s decline. He’s the CEO, and he sets the tone for the whole company. I think burdening Apple with the perks and the social engineering interest is definitely distracting it from a focus on product quality. It’s certainly taking some of Tim’s precious time that he could spend making Apple’s products better. It also attracts new employees that are more likely to be there for the perks instead of making great products.

Mitch and I aren’t the only ones who feel this way. Steve Jobs didn’t feel the need to do that either, and he’s clearly the man that made Apple what it was in its heyday.

I was saying the same thing a year ago in the last few paragraphs of this article: https://library.creativecow.net/kobler_helmut/Mac-Pro-review/1

And the bugginess seems even worse now, not better.

The one thing I can dispute about this new blog entry you brought up is where the blame goes. I say it goes directly on Tim Cook, who has been at the helm while Apple slowly but steadily squandered its most valuable asset: reliability and ease of use.

I can’t help notice that as soon as Jobs died, Cook began creating a “kinder, gentler” Apple — one with longer vacations for employees, with matching contributions to charities, with $20,000 subsidies for egg freezing and with mea culpas to scoundrels and shake down artists like Jesse Jackson during his ridiculous crusade over minority hiring in Silicon Valley.

This has been Tim’s unique mark, and it’s all been done in tandem with a noticeable drop in product quality. I don’t think Tim is strong enough to ride herd over the sprawl that Apple has become due to its growth. Jobs could but Cook can’t. And Tim seems too interested in creating a culture that embodies his “progressive” values, instead of having a laser focus on the products themselves and attracting people who have that same focus (as opposed to those seeking a cushy, perk-laden job at a rich company).

Fred, I think you should reinstall Yosemite. I doubt this is a “bug” that Apple needs to fix. It’s probably some corruption in your particular install, and a fresh install of the OS will probably do the trick.

I have three Thunderbolt Cinema Displays running from a 2013 Mac Pro. All seem to work well with Yosemite since launch day.

Charles, I was indeed cutting with the Inspector open. I’ll try with it closed but that’s a horrible “solution” since I use the inspector all the time.

    Thanks for the tip though!

    NUMBER 1 ON MY LIST:

    1) More responsive UI!

I just finished cutting a 3.5 minute video and was annoyed at the laggy UI in general — the playhead stuttering when beginning playback, a .5 second delay when clicking a clip to seeing it selected, stuff like that.

This is on a 6 core 2013 Mac Pro with 32GB of ram, and a 8 drive Thunderbolt 2 RAID, so I know it’s not my hardware. Sometimes quitting and relaunching FCP X would help, but in general, the interface is not spry.
