“I’m 100% certain that not ONE SINGLE FCPX user on Planet Earth would be using it if FCP7 had become 8 and FCPX was from some other company.”

I’m afraid you’re wrong about that, Lance.

Before Apple announced FCP X, I had been working in FCP 7 and beginning to wish it was a lot easier to quickly try out new ideas (plugging in new clips, re-arranging clips, trimming clips.) without spending so much time fixing gaps in the Timeline. It occurred to me that the conventional approach to clip and track editing was actually pretty clunky.

About a year later, Apple announced FCP X, and when it finally shipped, I appreciated the new approach to the Timeline. It’s what’s still kept me with X, despite wondering if Apple can keep up with Adobe’s rapid development of Premiere, and all the tools available in Creative Cloud.

In other words, I would probably be using X if it wasn’t from Apple, and even if Apple had launched FCP 8. I use plenty of non-Apple apps already, there’s nothing keeping me glued to an Apple app just because it’s from Apple. In fact, apps developed outside Apple often seem to be better supported…

    I hope you’re right Jeremy.

Seeing the rapid development of Adobe CC makes me wonder if Apple will fall (further?) behind, since Pro apps still seem to be an afterthought for the company. Some kind of release before NAB, instead of dead silence, would be reassuring.

Send to Motion would sure be nice…

    February 13, 2014 at 7:19 am in reply to: FCPX 10.1 tests on 2010 & 2013 MacPros

That report made me feel validated in buying the stock 6 core with D500s instead of a custom rig with D700s.

Hope upcoming tests do the same thing!

  • Hopefully, Apple can improve that inconsistent IP traffic pretty easily.

Personally, I’m just pretty happy to hear about the 8 drive TB2 RAIDs hitting 1100 MB/s in RAID 5. That’s an appreciable step up from TB1 models.

  • Thanks Bob, those speeds sound promising. Any idea when the TB2 version of the ThunderRAID will be available?

December 27, 2013 at 8:32 am in reply to: So what MacPro configurations are people ordering?

Went with 6 cores, d700, 32gb and the 512gb boot drive.

8 cores was too much money and too much of a drop of CPU speed.

Wonder if I need 512 for boot drive because my current one is 256 with 78gb free but I also want to run an install of Boot Camp this time around so felt better with a little more room available.

I got my order in within 2 minutes of the machine going on sale and delivery says “January.” Keep hoping that means early January!

Maybe all the under-the-hood improvements for Mac Pro support took a while. I hope so.
