Well, if not today, then probably tomorrow or Thursday.

Maybe we were mistaken to assume a Tuesday target. Tuesdays are for new product introductions, but the new MP has already been introduced, and all that’s left to do is enable the “Buy” button and some configuration options in the online Store. That can happen anytime I guess.

Still, I really miss the old Apple, which could reimagine and reinvent a new computer without leaving its customers hanging for 3.5 years.

I just got a written spreadsheet from an Apple biz rep that says those upgrade prices from MacRumors are true.

    From the 6 core machine:
    256GB to 512GB HD: $300
    16 to 32Gb: $400
    D500 to D700: $600

    For the 4 core machine:
    upgrade to 6 cores: $500
    256GB to 512GB HD: $300
    12 to 16GB: $100
    12 to 32GB: $500
    D300 to D500: $400
    D300 to D700: $1000

Wow, I was expecting the D700 upgrade to be closer to $1000.

If it’s indeed $600, I might have to go for it. I’ve had my current Mac Pro for almost 5 years, and would like to not worry about upgrades for another 5 years.

I’d also feel dumb to not take advantage of a $300 upgrade price to go from 256GB to 512Gb on the main drive.

I was wondering that about C4d as well!

Did a quick search, and didn’t see too much about Open CL support….

I’m angling for the 6 core option as well.

Personally, I would put the money into the GPU because you can always add more ram later when your cash frees up. Upgrading GPUs after purchase is far more difficult, if not impossible (we don’t know enough yet about that issue).

Apple seems confident that GPUs, going forward, will have a big role to play in video — that’s why they put two of them in the machine as a standard configuration. I would definitely secure as much GPU power as possible….

I love this headline from Macworld.com:

    https://www.macworld.com/article/2041203/the-wait-is-nearly-over-apple-unveils-new-mac-pro.html

    “The wait is nearly over.”

The date of that post? June 10.

And that was a year after Apple changed a processor in the old Tower design and tried to call it a “New” Mac Pro. After the outcry, they stopped insulting everyone’s intelligence and acknowledged it was essentially the same old machine as it had been for years.

Wait, wait, wait, wait…..and then wait some more.

God, I miss the old Apple. The one that could ship a Pro product without all the months/years of drama.

Even if Apple isn’t ready to ship today, Dec 3, I doubt there’s anything stopping the company from posting BTO pricing *today*, and simply having the web store say “Ships Dec 20” or whatever. Having waited about 3.5 years for this update, I’m *more than ready* to know what my options are, and how much they’ll cost.

There’s definitely a lack of plain old empathy at Apple for certain customers. Take Apple’s inexplicable and massive product delays (i.e., 1255 days without a Mac Pro, long absence of Final Cut before X’s introduction, selling ’09’s edition of Mac iWork until just recently, etc. etc. etc.) and combine it with the company’s asinine, smug radio silence about what’s going on, and you get deep frustration on the part of some customers…..customers who have invested massive amounts of time and money in the Apple ecosystem, all with Apple’s eager encouragement.

But it’s all about Apple’s convenience. Apple’s schedule. Whatever.

I still prefer Apple products over the competition, but these last few years have shown me that Apple can be *deeply* fallible, and there’s some aspect of the company’s culture that is rotten….something that’s entirely content with doing a mediocre, apathetic job for its customers.

The new Mac Pro may be great, I’m definitely looking forward to it, but that doesn’t excuse all the bullshit that’s come beforehand, and I’m really, *really* sick of being in an epic holding pattern because some grossly over-paid, comfy execs couldn’t be bothered to plan a smooth product transition.

    Well, I’m pretty disappointed.

Apple is really pushing it…it’s been about 1225 days since they made a credible upgrade to the Mac Pro. That’s just vile. To push things so far to the end of the year doesn’t show a lot of sympathy or empathy with customers who have already gotten the shaft for the last several years. No, it’s the usual Steve Jobs tone-deaf, near-sociopathic treatment for us…

  • I was very excited about Blu-Ray a few years ago, but then started buying movies through iTunes, and will NEVER go back to buying a physical disk again.

    Blu-Rays:
    1) scratch fairly easily (as all disks do), and sometimes get lost
    2) they don’t play on most computers, iPhones, iPads, etc., and..
    3) You have to physically have the damn disk with you to use it. A pain in the butt if you left it upstairs, back at the office, in the car, in the laptop bag, etc.
    4) Have damned ads and trailers that I have to spend 5 minutes tediously skipping through, just to see the main attraction I paid for.

    Digital downloads like iTunes:
    1) Never degrade and are never lost (you can always re-download online)
    2) Play on all my devices
    3) Are immediately available on any device without having to run and get a physical product.
    4) Remember where in the movie I stopped watching, and can resume that play position even when I resume watching on another device.
    5) No damn ads.

    It’s all downhill for Blu-Ray going forward…

Just keep in mind that Apple may be releasing a new Macbook Pro Retina in the next month or so. You might want to look at Macrumors.com’s Buyer’s Guide for details.
