I’ll bet your pictures are too big. I had this too with several pics that were 3000 x 3000 and cured the problem by down-rezzing the pictures.

You are now a member of the club.
There is no known cure for this condition. I find in comes and goes in waves. Sometimes it doesn’t happen for several months – sometimes 3 times a week. It’s pointless contacting Apple. Just close down FCP and reopen. Be glad it isn’t constant crashing.

Does this add to the compression time?

Check that your SEQUENCE SETTINGS are the same as your RENDER SETTINGS. If they are different, you will experience all kinds of weird stuff. They should be the same.
Also, it might be a good idea to set your sequence to UNLIMITED RT (unlimited real time playback).
