February 19, 2010 at 8:32 am in reply to: Batch capturing with time code breaks

    Hi James,

timecode breaks on DV are a nightmare! To your relinking question; the first thing I’d try is to trash the .pmr/.mdb file in your AvidMediaFiles folder, the restart your application. Avid should start scaning and creates a new database (.pmr) file. Maybe this already solves the problem. If not we get to the relinking business. First of all, at least in my experience relinking can either work great (clips get online) or fail utterly (no matter what you do you don’t get your clips online). That being said now the short explanation of how to do it. Mark your clips in your bin rightclick choose relink. In the new relinking window you have some options to choose. I normally only choose the drive I know the media files are on, put a check on ‘Relink only to media from the current project’ (if that is the case) ‘Match case when comparing tape names’ and as your relinking method you have to try. In your case I would use most recent. If all of this fails one last chance might be to import the .mxf files for your offline clips from the avid media files folder and retry the relinking procedure.

Hope I could be of some help. If not let me know.
    Good Luck!

Thanks for your fast answer David. Strange that you are having the problem in a HD Timeline which I have in SD. ALAS for the ways of Avid… I guess I’ll have to do some more research on that.
If someone else has any input it would be great to hear.

    Hi Martin,
hope my guess solves the problem. Tomorrow when I´m back at my avid I`ll give it a check. When I know more I’ll let you know.

    Hi Martin,
not sure if I`m right, but can you really change Tape names with imported files? I thought this would just be possible with digitized clips. You might try to export an ALE file from your bin and then change it using an text editor. I’m not sure and not in front of an Avid right now. Maybe this works.

January 2, 2010 at 12:17 pm in reply to: transitions effecting other layers

    Hi Lori,
what kind of lower third are you having on V2? Is a imported real time moving matte or did you get fill and alpha seperately and combined them in the timeline with the matte key effect? If you open the nest of your lower third the alpha should be in V2.3. On which layer is the fill? V2.2 or V 2.1? In my case putting the fill on the other layer V.2.2 rather than V2.1. made it work. Had the same problem as you do.
Hope I could be of help.

December 28, 2009 at 5:15 pm in reply to: Relinking files

    Hi Giacomo,
what do you mean with loading the mov files from the media tool? In your mxf folder there should only be .mxf files. .mov files are QT files. If you drag the .mxf giles from the media tool into a bin they are still offline? That shouldn`t happen. Where those files digitised or imported? You should be able to drag the clips (Media tool Master clips and Media Files checked) from your media tool to a bin. Otherwise you could check the relink options. Maybe unchecking the box “relink only to media from the current project” might help. Relinking in Avid is a tricky business. Do you already have a cut sequence that needs to be relinked? You wrote that you tried to trash the old .mdb file in the mxf Folder. Did the avid application do a scan after restarting it? After rwstarting it should write a new .mdb/pmr file. You can also try to e.g. create a new title (title tool). After creating a new .mxf file the avid should update the database file.
Hope some of my suggestions are of any help. If not keep us updated!

December 28, 2009 at 11:05 am in reply to: H264 Export

    Hi Job,
thanks for your input. Right now I`m doing the export the way you describe it. Export via QT same as source then reencode to H264 using QT Pro. When I reimport the file back into Avid there is no gamma shift. What seems strange to me is that not only in the H264 codec but also e.g. in MJPEG A this gamma shift happens. I frankly don`t know what engine the Avid application uses for encoding QT files. I exported the same file on machine which only has the QT viewer not Pro and got the same result (gamma shift). How does Avid encode a QT when QT pro is not installed on the system? Does the application itself contain a QT Pro?
Alas for the brave new file based world we`re living in. I hope the condec jungle we`re wading through right now will lighten up a bit in the future!

December 25, 2009 at 4:22 pm in reply to: H264 Export

    Hi Folks,
big thanks to all of you for your fast replies. What I actually do is exporting my clips to QT using H264 and RGB checked in the Avid export settings(working on Avid PC). I know the way of altering the “washed out look” using QT Pro (Blend). But as far as I`ve understood this only changes the appearence of the QT movie on your computer screen. But what I`m encountering is the actual altering of pixel values, not just their appearence on screen. After reimporting such a QT h264 export RGB Import RGB also is gamma shift of 0.7 in the Avid. So therefore I`m thinking that Avid does something else than just altering the appearence. As mentioned in my first mail right now I`m using QT Animation or Avid codecs on export and then reconvert to H264 using QT Pro. These files brought back into Avid just look fine(in regards to gamma). Therefore Avid must be doing something I don`t understand on export. Anyone got a clue?
Thanks to all for listening and I wish you all a merry christmas!!!

    Yours sincerely

October 3, 2009 at 8:38 pm in reply to: New Aspect Ratio = Pan & Scan?

    Hi Shea,
not sure if I`m getting it right. If you use the Avid Pan and scan node you can simply adjust the framing of your shot by using the x and y sliders. To see your actual shot you got to change the view mode to target.
Hope i could be of some minor help.
    Yours sincerely
    Hans
