  • Batch capturing with time code breaks

I’m having a problem batch capturing from DV tapes (via Sony DSR-11 deck) because of time code breaks. When there’s a break between takes, Avid pre-rolls past the IN mark, can’t find it, and hangs up. The timer wheel (or whatever it’s called) keeps spinning and I can’t do anything except Ctrl+Alt+Delete to end the program. (Actually, it may be that the pre-roll is not completely crashed but is backing up to find the IN mark at ONE FRAME PER MINUTE.) If other files have been captured prior to the hang up, but the bin hasn’t been saved before I have to end the program, the clips in the bin are listed as off-line even thought the associated files are in the media files folder. It seems that the only way to avoid this is to roll back and forth watching the time code for breaks every time I log a clip for capture. Then, I have to record it manually. Can anyone tell me (or give me a reference to a section in the manual) how to relink media files with the master clips so I don’t have to redigitize them? Does anyone know any way beat the timecode break problem? Any help will be greatly appreciated. James

    Hi James,

timecode breaks on DV are a nightmare! To your relinking question; the first thing I’d try is to trash the .pmr/.mdb file in your AvidMediaFiles folder, the restart your application. Avid should start scaning and creates a new database (.pmr) file. Maybe this already solves the problem. If not we get to the relinking business. First of all, at least in my experience relinking can either work great (clips get online) or fail utterly (no matter what you do you don’t get your clips online). That being said now the short explanation of how to do it. Mark your clips in your bin rightclick choose relink. In the new relinking window you have some options to choose. I normally only choose the drive I know the media files are on, put a check on ‘Relink only to media from the current project’ (if that is the case) ‘Match case when comparing tape names’ and as your relinking method you have to try. In your case I would use most recent. If all of this fails one last chance might be to import the .mxf files for your offline clips from the avid media files folder and retry the relinking procedure.

Hope I could be of some help. If not let me know.
    Good Luck!
    Hans

Hans, that was sooo easy. I deleted the .pmr & .mdb files, restarted Media Composer, it scanned and all the media files are on-line now. Problem solved. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Now I’ve got to do something about the timecode breaks, like never powering off the camera. Anyway I really appreciate the tip. James
