Have you tried upgrading to 4.5?
The upgrades solved a lot of weird bugs.

  • First:

Agree with all the above… sort of -;)

    Then.

As working with video is fun, so is working with audio.
If you have a paying client, you _should_ advice him or her to take the pro route. If that is not possible: Have some fun!

None of us here can give an exact answer, even if the audio recording is “state of the art” (whatever that might be without adding context). Simply because we cannot hear the recording and don’t now the exact audiovisual context it is supposed to fit in. So we cannot give anything but general (and in given situations: totally wtrong!) advices.

It all boils down to this: If you’re gonna fool around with audio: Please do, and have fun with it. The most important tools are YOUR EARS. And some time…

But you can be in for a ride without some experience, and there are ways to better the result.

First of all there isn’t two similar pairs of ears or equal listening conditions. So:
When you’re happy. Take a copy and listen to it on different equipent. This usually gives you a hint of what you didn’t do right the first time.

    Take it back
Adjust (But not only with adding more FX!!!)

    etc untill you’re happy.

This is sort of the quick way to learn how compression effects recordings.

It is regrettably impossible to tell you to compress the midrange by a ratio of X and then gaining it X desibels, adding Y hum remover and Z EQ without listening and familiarizing to the material first.

    So:

Spend some time. Have some fun.
    Or… pay someone else -;)

  • Not familiar with the multiband compressor that comes with FCP/STP, thus could be the best advice for both functions.

Compress a bit harder in top and middle, a lot less i n the sub area (because if you make too much “presence” in the bottom it will basically eat all your other audio)

As a very generalizing advice, compress the most in the top if possible, and lower the gain a bit – given that you do not have too hash ssss, k & t sounds in your recording.
Compress a bit less in the middle, gain some more.
    Carefull with the bottom.

But: Remember to play around with the settings and TRUST YOUR EARS!
If it sounds trashy from my suggestions, trust it and try something else.

It’s easy to get exited with compressor and over do it. In this setting that might be exactly the point (depending on taste). Carefull though so that the vocals do not end up “pumping” around the level where the compressor starts to work. In that case, some limiting might be adviceable first.

Watch out for those consonants and have fun!

You’ll loose some or crank some…

If you want 4:3 and 16:9, and you want the 4:3 material to fill the screen, you basically have to edit in a 4:3 timeline and letterbox the 16:9 material. (Just mark the relevant clips as anamorphic and drop them into the 4:3 timeline. Quite often it looks better if you crop top and bottom of the anamorphic picture with one pixel)

Or… If you want a 16:9 anamorphic output, you’ll either have to crank the 4:3 photage (too much) to make it fit, or leave it nicely in the middle of the frame with black bars on the side.

    Hm… That’s about it, I think…

    Yes you’re right!

What I was thinking of was this:

    https://catalog2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ModelDetail?displayTab=R&storeId=11201&catalogId=13051&itemId=94208&catGroupId=14569&modelNo=AJ-HDC27H&surfModel=AJ-HDC27H

Follow the Download link. But it’s only a framerate converter for varicam footage.

After a quick search, though, check these links. Hope they help:

    https://www.dvfilm.com/hvx200/
    https://www.hdforindies.com/2005/06/update-on-flip4mac-mxf-import-with
    https://www.hff-fcpug.de/Wissenspool/fortgeschritten/p2/p2.html

Seems you need flip4mac to use these files natively, as FCP just imports them through FireWire natively.

Interesting for someone looking at p2 solutions these days…

Try going to Panasonic and dl the P2 for fcp plug?

I’m not sure if this answers your question, but this is my guess.

I’ve seen that this Dell might be a good option (Higher contrast ++++) and way cheaper:

And if you add this coupon
    – code after adding it to your bascet it is “only” 779$

Recdent buyer of the 23″ Cinema HD and pretty happy about it.

  • [Paul] “and they have that new video card Quadro from NVDIA I think that has 512RAM on it and costs, $1650….is this just for 3D programs or will this help with FCP, Shake, Motion alot?”

This will be good for motion and newr FCP plugs like the new Magic Bullet suite that offloads a lot of tasks to the GPU.

As far as I understood for a previous post PCIe is two ways while PCIX is one way. This should translate into: When plugs and apps get updated you’ll have an extra processor in the GPU for paralell rendering = great spped gains.

I tend to disagree with Walther on the point of the G5. This (most likely) is the last machine that runs with all current software. It’s IMHO a very good choice instead of jumping on the Intell wagon as soon as it comes out. THAT – my guess is – is going to be a rather bumpy experience the first 6 – 9 months or so.

    My 2 cents.

If you can wait, I’d wait untill the Intell machines come, though – as I guess the G5’s will be less price (as with the Legacy G4’s that booted into OS 9, when the G5’s came. Those were nicely priced, as the dual 2,7 Ghz is right now…)
