What does a cool client have to do with a pay raise folks should get when the move up the staffing ladder?

Absolutley. Just be factual. Don’t ask. Tell them you are there to collect a late payment.
You’ll be surprised how quick you can get a check by waiting in someone’s lobby asking their clients if they are owed money as well.

    same here.
Last time my shirt had a collar I was gettin’ married.
I think the attore thing should not be overlooked. And I mean, if you dress too pretty in what is suppose to be a creative environment, man you may do more harm than good. I’m not saying a client would tour and pass because an employee was a yuppie but if folks are walking around in ties, potential clients may just split cuz they think they are in the wrong building. lol
I can tell you on the hiring end, I like those comfy and confident to come as they are to an interview, not hide in a uniform they have no intention of wearing later. I base that off how I use to interview… in my favorite tie-dyed shirt. I even use to print my resumes on tie-dyed paper. The last thing I wanted to do was put up a front then have to stick to it for the next two years.
On the other hand, I have a buddy who doesn’t shave but can’t grow a beard. Wears a rednack ball cap that’s all greezy. Slouches and plops his backpack in the corner with a sigh when he walks into a suite. Not many folks are tickled to see him as there editor that day.
Bottom line… be comfy but give a crap.

I’ve only had one freelancer with a bad enough cell phone problem to send him packin’. What an odd thing. Ya tend to your cell phone so ya don’t miss a gig then rid yourself of gigs due to the phone. WTF?

This list has kind of been paqssed around a lot. Some speak as if it’s a template. Like the dress to impress thing. Hopefully my El Duderino t-shirt and sandals are impressive enough. 😉
The bottom line is if do a better job than anyone else in town, you’ll be busy.

People often look at this as losing a client. While this did happen, it happened long ago… when their funds ran out.
Don’t beat yourself up over it. When I was younger, I had a motto of there is no good reason to ever lose a client. Now, brother lack of funds is a fine reason to lose one.

I hear ya. I often can’t call my best clients clients at all because they have become such great friends.
This has been a tight year for my family and I. Last week, my cruisin’ vessel up a died:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMoIXx_qWaA
A client I know as a friend now called me when he saw this video with a “you could probably use some cash for some new wheels. How ’bout we revise the video you made for my band tomorrow so you can replace the cruisin’ vessel?”
    Gold.
Dude didn’t need revisions. He wanted to give me some money. We revised because we are old school men who require work for such a thing.
    What a great guy.

Disarm em. I am very laid back and have no problem calling even the highest of execs dude. I explain we’re just having a conversationa nd as you have found, oftena drink helps em with that. When I can, I talk them out of dogging their video with their presence rather than with some talent but as you know, you can sense when not to play that card. When you sense that, man, don’t go against it.
Don’t hesitate to bust a take and tell em why. Their hands have to be natural…again from that we’re just having a conversation thing you told em in the beginning. Have fun… so they will too.
Dont yell action or speed or anything else that will serve no other purpose than freaking them out. Don’t overdo the production. Lights, booms, and people not required only add to their anxiety. A dude with a camera is far less intimidating than a tv crew. What the “uh”s and the “ya know”s. You can edit these out if it’s a vo but if they are doing standups and doing this, you have to ease them into not doing it. Set em up if you need to. Ask a question and let em answer to create that very conversation you are telling them you need. Lastly, good enough won’t be good enough later. You too will get frustrated and it’s easy to say we’re fine when ya aint. Don’t. Tell em it was perfect only when it was or they will just keep doing the wrong thing.
