I can’t see it being beneficial in any way.
Can you imagine your talent looking at a camera all laying on it’s side like “wtf is the guy thinking?”
Seems easier to just shoot what ya need the way ya need it.

It’s up to you. How long do you want it to be? How big do you want it to be?
There are no rules or templates for it. Use the force. Throw it up when it fels right and take it down when it’s time. Five seconds is plenty…. or you can leave it for the duration of the reenactment.This is not unlike asking how your opening titlers should be. It’s up to you, man.

You can add a shoulder mount to any capable $2k-$3k HDV camera with XLR inputs. More than fine for local news. Skip the big old school bricks. A little lithium battery will last longer than your photogs. I’m not a fan of on-camera lighting because it makes everything so flat and news looking. There are lots of dimmable LED solutions though and, weird as it looks when I’m wearing it, I prefer a headband dimmable LED unit. It allows me to get the proper direction on the principal/talent and, should I get a squint from someone not use to being on camera, I simply turn my head a bit without ever moving the camera at all.
I don’t use viewfinders anymore. Diggin the freedoms of LCD screens on every HDV camera. -

You’ve never learned enough and you’ll always need more skills.
That goes for all of us.
You just are not marketing yourself enough. Your lack of confidence is your biggest handicap. Don’t question yourself. And don’t go into interviews boasting about yourself either. Explain what you can do for them and how much money you can make for them. Your speed, your skillset, your people skills, and your creativity are your selling points for that. I’ll stress that people skills bullet one more time. It’s half the gig. -
It’s not a strike. It’s just not a selling point. Editing or shooting news is a step below wedding videographers. It’s not that it says you don’t know what you are doing, it’s just that unless you create stuff on the side, you have nothing on your reel to show your capabilities. Create that reel. Mok up projects and do some pro bobo stuff to get the stuff you need on your reel. Leave the news stories off of your reel but do list your employment history on your resume.
And again, look far beyond your home town. -
Evolution happens, Tim. Congrats on being a part of it. Don’t beat yourself up. Those around you are evolving as well. They’ll be a part of the new waves, knowing waves change.

Many of us used news as a leg up to get into production. You stayed in it for a long time though. A year was all I needed to get an entry level job in production. You’ll be getting an entry level job. While news is not impressive to any post house, it will be less of a gamble for some places than going with a student with no experience at all. As long as your salary expectations are not high, you should be working shortly after looking.
Be tenacious. Be humble. Take what is offered. Work hard and move up. Don’t hesitate to relocate. -

Maybe I take strive for granted. Every job I’ve ever left, be it due to boredom or being laid off by a company that lost focus, resulted in a five figure raise. I gave myself a six figure raise when the last company I staffed for folded. Again, I’m happy for those moving onward and upward and I don’t mind seeing 80s mentality post houses make more room for those of us who evolve with the industry.
Cakes are for celebrations. Yes, most of the ones you are worried about, or pretending to be, had cake last night. -
I don’t see that. No less video is being made than last year or ten years ago. Quite the opposite. Yes, they’ll all go on to start their own companies or partner up to do it. I still see multiplying income and gaining creative freedoms as a good thing.
