of course there are alot of startving artists out there. People don’t get into this business for the money.
It’s a passion. It has to be to be good enough to get paid to do it. Without the passion, it aint gonna work. If you have this passion, nothing will stop you from doing it as a living. If you don’t there are far easier ways to make money not having fun.

as AMrk mentined, free work becomes more expected and less apriciated over time. Your on the right track tho. Create some labors of love and push em as far as you can with effects. Show case what you cna do in a reel that is no longer than a few minutes. It’s ok to start dong things at a low price but you’ve done your internship. No need to do it for free, imo.
Now, having said that, I landed many a sweet job in my day just by coming in to the place I wanted to work and making myself available for anything that may be done. I edited night time projects, hung shelves, took out the trash, whatever. I was explioted into making a few free demos for some companies but I also got some jobs I wanted. I was also getting my name out there in doing this and thats always good. Call around to the local post houses and let em know exactly what your looking for. One of em will either have a spot for you or have some this and that work they will have you do for em. You’ll be shakin some hands and thats what ya need right now. -

I still make family home movies, man. It’s how I got started and I still love it. I make a music video or two a year of my family. Butted together, they now run almost an hour long and I enter that in festivals sometimes as a documentary. It’s funny cuz I always get contacted by somone explaining they have a music video catagory. Basicly telling me I’m not gonna win anything if I leave it in that catagory but by definition, it is just that. It’s the story of my life in a nutshell.
Doesn’t always work out good though, being the family vidiot. My brother got married a month or two ago. I was a best man, along with my dad so Nan shot while the ceremony was happenin. I shot everything else and spent close to 30 hours editing it. Dude watched it and had freakin revisions. What? you cant revise a free video can you? Isn’t that like, a law or something?

I am hooknig the Avid up at home today. I stumbled across my very first camcorder. A Quasar VHS camera from 1984. I can’t tell ya how many miles I have on this camera. I shot with it constantly until replacing it with an 8mm camera. It still works.
well, it powers up, anyway. I can’t bring myself to trash it. Just too many memories.

I ajust export quicktime references from Avid and use that. Always get great results. -
a fluidmotion slow mo may make it less irritating.
No way to remove it as that’s how it lives on the footage but this will make it less abrupt. -
Not is you select 1:1 in your media creation settings for renders.

Jim, I’d go smoke upstairs and two FCP stations downstairs. I realize you’d be weeding your Avid freelance pool here but you’d already have the smoke covered and the cream will rise to the top, starting downstairs. You’d have three fully funcional HD suites, all three capable of handling any SDI projects that come in the door. Going weith FCP downstairs would free up some budget on some sparkage, ect for the smoke suite or salary for the artists on the new gear.
To me, your other logocal choice is to go with DS upstairs and a lower end Avid product downstairs to maintain the current freelance pool. I’d do two Xpress Pro machines before I’d go with Adrenaline. You’d be doing the grafix intensive stuff upstairs anyway.
I still like solution one. FCP with some bells n whistles is a very billable thing. More so than offlining on Xpress Pro and not much more expensive all HD ready. Smoke speaks for itslef. Thats no bash on DS, I just don’t have to sell ya on it.
Agreed eQ is way expensive. You’d have to have a hardcore hourly rate with anough clietele to back that up to make it work. I wish I would have never sat in on a motion tracking session at NAB. Made all other trackers pretty lame after seeing it track stuff off the screen. -
what soft ware are ya runnin? some odler software wont let ya mix resolutions and it sounds like your slate or somthing may still be at a different rez than the newly batched footage.
