if you have a brother pannin’stuff in the middle on the mixer, you have to smack him in the head. Thats like, the rule or something.
Panning is totally cool in avid’s mixing tool but alwyas a no no on the external mixer. This allows you to have a choice in post.
that said, I’ll often pn both in th middle. I seldom mix em to the same level but I usually like how if one is too bassy and the otheris too natty, they balance eac other out quite naturally, saving an eq from me.
I have only one ear now and believe it or not, I think this helps when mixing. It was a terrible handicap when it first happened but now it’s kinda like a painter lookin’ crosseyed to shade. It’s a good overall blur as to wats goin on.bottom line is whatever makes yer boat float/whatever the client needs. I seldom send out split audio so I never leave dialog panned left or right unless going for that quazi-surround sound. yu know.. dude walks left… paaaan left feelin all hollywood like?

thats the best way.. to record it with deck control turned off. This way, you’ll get audio as well. two birds and neiher of these birds will be quick in avid.
You’d have to build the blanking line in photoshop ot title tool, animate it in AE or your dve, layer some more of those and then start futsin’ with audio and cuss the obvious boundries there.
the other way is like, open capture tool, turn off deck control, hit capture, play a tape, push rewind in 4 differnt spots and say sweet. I like that. no cussin’. -

Yes, a quicktime with an uncompressed Avid codec is cool. I still use the uncompressed meridien codec. Avid sees it as a fast import.
You will notice that brightness shift on every quicktime movie, no matter what codec ya use. I don’t know the cause of it. I know it’s not there with 601 image sequences, although they are not always possible. I hate to admit it but I allow for it at the top of the clip then fix it with a color effect and quick dissolv. Sounds bogus ad hacky but thats what I do. I often find it to be the perfect place for a sapphire glow. lol

School is just something that is not required for what we do. Experience is.
It’s sure hard to get experience with no experience. Nobody ever asks for education or certification though. Tat said, your reel is your best tool for landing gigs. Your personality is what will get ya hired once in the door. People skills are half of editing. Very imortant. Not to be overlooked. I know alot of VERY talented artists who are not going to make more than 50k a year because they havn’t the people skills. I also know alot of six figure-makin’ hacks because they have the gift of gab.
I havn’t advice. If your young and this is your only opportunity to go to college, you should do it. If you are wanting to get to work right away, build a reel and shop it around right now. Take what is offered and work your way up. School will only delay that but man the parties are fun.
A wise man once said college is a place for young people to go to find out who they are. Very true words. -

rebooting does get old but yer gonna have to do it every day.
This is why so many miss the good ole days of Avid. I’ve gone from 2 crashes a month to 2 crashes a day. -

we shall see. I’m not sure that competing and continuing on is the plan. That’d mean alot of people have been veeery bad at their gig for the last 5 years or so. I’m wondering if the plan isn’t to merge or to file.
To me, it was a easy as throwing a few bells and whistles on the meridien line until the new breed was actually ready for release. That would have maintained their following and reputation while building for a future. As it is, they seem to have grabbed the axe themselves.
