ahhhh… to train or to pay for experience.
I have found paying for experience means another opinion, an after-work schedule, family, etc. Being that any monkey can learn what the buttons do, I’d rather tell someone what I need knowing they will do it how I want it.
… Hence editors’ salaries being an all time low, never to raise again.

I call it letting them tell the story and writing nothing.
Voice overs are to tell the story due to missing links. It’s not a style. Voice overs are saying “we didn’t have enough in the can to tell you the story so we hired this chain-smoking’ dude.”

I evolved from a six figure avid suite to creative cloud on a macbook pro. LOL
    Best upgrade I ever did.

No legalities unless using other companies’ sources. It’s up to the director. Sometimes I get quite lengthy and sometimes I don’t have so much as name keys in a piece. That’s what I love about docs. There is no template whatsoever.

No. But you need to educate this client. Simply explain you are freelance and, unless booked by the, are subject to being booked when they call. They can always offer an on-call fee. As for renders, que em up and set em up to cook overnight… leaving and not returning that day, or build other elements as one cooks at a time and stay on the clock.

A retainer fee now will protect you. Other than that, 48 hours is the standard and freelancers understand this.

  • Just add creative cloud or any cheap NLE and you are ready to get started. A light kit would help but you can always make do in the field. That;s what I usually do because I usually, well, always shoot these in their house or surroundings. Natural is good as the friends and family who watch it expect this lighting.
Think content first with these. Just let em tell their story and accent that with still and video they provide.
Music is very important. I’d get an account with audio jungle or dewolfe music… or both. Both will let you pay an annual blanket fee so you don’t have to pay per needle drop.
