I have always found it entertaining when a client requests a different rate for digitizing, encoding, rendering, whatever. It totally makes me wanna say, well how much should I charge when I’m turned around listening to you talk about your boss, wife and dog for an hour?
    lol
Surely counseling is twice the rate.
I found it to not be that cost effective for them as I stopped what I was doing in the session to log my 7 minutes of capture time and subtract it from the edit time, adding the render time and recalculating pee breaks. Much easier to write down we started at 9 and he split at 5.
Life aint gonna be complicated. Grown ups just create complication to appear more important than kids.

    My secret formula:
Start with hourly rate. Judge how long it will take. Multiply.

  • Bruce this is all so new and viewers vary so much that there is just not a template for this yet.
In my birthing stages of aquiring sponsorships for my clips, I have to admit I have made up pricing on the fly. I go into the pitch as if I have a rate card but by the end of the conversation, I’m taking whatever I can get and that aint much… yet.
I’d venture to guess where it all lands will be a price based on views… not a monthly fee type of thing. Again, there is no norm on this either… not even in television anymore. Our local Cable Co. now charges about 18 cents per 30 second spot. This means they are doing the same… haggling for numbers. They will lose and webbage will win so I’d think 5 cents per view is a good haggle point to start at. You could base it off of what local ineffective television ads run and use that as barter fodder.

It’s just a difference in current thinking vs old school thinking. Again, pan and scan was an after thought band aid that they have adhered to rather than re-write old code. It’s obviously beyond them to write a usable DVE as it’s not changed since ’95 when they introduced the 3D DVE in Media Composer version 5.
To me, it’d be easier for them to work out a deal with adobe that simply makes AE Avid’s DVE within the app itself.

but that would be forward thinking.

Well I know automatic duck has always been good at the reverse work flow… from FCP to Avid. I imagine now that more folks online with FCP than Avid, they have a cool fix for you.

No “client” will ever ask you to do such a thing.

I once had a client try to get me to pirate the FBI warning. lol
Bottom line.. he who puished the red button is breaking the law. I have found the best way to react is to laugh like you thought they were kidding and proceed without wavering.
Same as when they ask if I can do a page turn, really.

I charge for nothing but time. Doesn’t matter oif I’m producing, shooting, editing, or rendering.
I clock in when I start working and I clock out when I stop. Keeps is very simple.
