  • Can’t import FCP EDL

    Hi;
    I’m trying to open a FCP EDL in Avid. The video opens but not the audio. Video is from a tape source, while audio is from cd’s and thumb drives, in other words it was imported. I tried giving the audio clips reel ID’s (in fcp) but Avid still won’t see it. Any ideas?
    Thanks,

    export a lieing CMX edl from FCP and name the reels with five characters or less.
    I have never done this but I think it will work. Just ensure you have used no more than 4 audio tracks. You can make another EDL for extra tracks if you have em.

    Thanks Grinner, I did try that. 276 clip entries later and it still wont work. There are three clips in the sequence that are actually from tape and they show up but the imported clips – not at all. Also tried exporting as an OMF minus the media. Whatever I try, the results are the same. One thing I noticed is that some clips are drop and some non-drop. I don’t think FCP allows user to change that.

    Well I know automatic duck has always been good at the reverse work flow… from FCP to Avid. I imagine now that more folks online with FCP than Avid, they have a cool fix for you.

    Automatic Duck seems to be the solution but my client (FCP owner) can’t afford it so it looks I’ll be doing it manually. I can create a txt. doc of the edl so at least I have all my timecodes. Thanks again, Grin.

    they can’t afford the payment of the software but they can totally afford you futsing around with it hours by the hour. This is why we’ll all be unemployed next year.

    One day of editing services costs roughly the same as AD. One day is what it will take me to re-build the timeline. The logic escapes me. Anyway, I found someone in town who has AD and is willing to have a go at it. Editing . . . it’s all about creative problem solving!

    Keep in mind that most independent producers work alone and with limited funds to get their projects completed. They can’t buy an expensive tool that they need for one project when the margin is tight.

    Post facilities on the other hand in the current economic climate need to be responsive to the needs of the clients they serve. To that end, we are purchasing Automatic Duck, which should allow our Final Cut clients to bring their projects in with relative ease in our Avid environment.
