The bottom line is it depends on how much you want to do this. On a business level, this will remove you from your market long enough you have to look at it as starting over when you return. By that, you’d take your curruent salary, double it for the time than throw another 50 percent to justify the marketing and networking to be done when you return. However, is hangin in Singapore (or wherever) to enjopy and expand horizons, man it’d be great to get paid to vacate for a spell. Again, it’s all in what you’ll get out of it outside of fundage.
Pulling a number out of thin air, I’d say 400k is a round number to start negotiating from.

I subscribe to this. When hiring freelancers, the certified engineer types are the ones I don’t waste time interviewing. I need artists and story-tellers. I do my own maintenence.

How I wish that were true. I purchased my Adrenaline suite because Avid advertised it as HDV native. It still was not when they killed it. Apps like Premiere beat em to the punch bigtime. It’s not hard to see what NLES/companies will be around in years to come and which one will not.

A bad edit is simply an edit without intention. That is to say, cutting for the sake of cutting… well, you’ve seen 80s music videos. But as long as every edit simply enhances feeling or shows the best take or shot, man there is no need to over analize. I’d say your best bet for what not to dos is your local Blockbuster store. Grab the most unknown horror film you can find. Anything with a screaming girl with blood on her face as the cover. Bad acting is not easy to edit so this is your best resource in this case.
That said, man just make some random ass cuts then watch it. Then ask yourself why it’s bad. Once you realize it’s because it was random, you can go back to story-telling. Second guessing yourself will not only take more time, it’ll make it less fun and that will always render a sub-par product.

100 percent of the time, it’s easier to drive across town and tell some dude “gimme my money, beotc.!” than to feed a system that has nothing to do with justice, ironicly calling itself the jusdicial system. I don’t even do jury duty. It’s too easy to yell “that’s him!” and get back to work.
