Is this After Effects CS3? Shape Layers are fast, flexible, very similar to basic Illustrator shapes, and totally open to tween animation.

If you need to use the Secret menu to get your composition to render correctly, there may be some other issue preventing the engine from working correctly. You should look into the CS3 help files for some suggestions on how to optimize your comp for rendering. If that doesn’t help, you may want to look into technical support.

In the long run, using the Secret menu is bad – it hides symptoms that may get worse when you have money on the line.

Are you looking for volumetric (visible light beams) entering the room or are you looking to create a shadow in the room from After Effects lighting?

If you are just looking for the shadow, then use a 3-D solid layer placed directly in front of the light as a gobo. Then, use the linear wipe transition to create the look of a light being slowly revealed.

If you are looking for volumetrics, then you are going to want a third-party plugin like Lux.
