Alex, it was just the preinstalled Quadro Fx570. We tried to install a Geforce gtx285 but the power supply of the HP was only 475W. Anyway, the card is working flawlessly.

Thanks Bob. I think that an Nvidia Geforce GTX 285 on a HP XW4600 Quad Core Q9550 2.8Ghz can be fine. What do you think?

I’m trying to build a system compatible with specifications found on the two BMD pages about Ultrascope, but it is very difficult unless buying old pcs and graphic cards from Ebay. Their support pages really need an update.

Thanks Bob and Erik. But if “You can share your media files, but projects will be local” this is useless in a collaborative network in which one suite is supposed to make the rough cut, another goes on with b-roll, another with graphics and another makes the post… The usual workflow is impossibile because the project must stay in one suite.

Is there a way to make Apple people conscious that there are not only enthusiasts but also many production companies that have based their workflow on Apple Pro Apps products and that need to plan their investments on the future? I’m not going to build any new FCP-based suite if I will not know if their product line will be discontinued or sold to anyone else, and I don’t like to see that in fall 2009 I ‘m not able to ingest any P2 or RED files in FCP without converting them in QT files, or to make a BD without Adobe suite and a PC. If we’ll be forced to turn back to old Avid, tell us now! We’ll begin to collect money! But marketing people in Cupertino should know that even if Pro Apps is a niche market, it was the propeller for many to choose Mac instead of Pc and move other people to Apple products. If you focus on consumer products it will be a right decision, but if you lose your “evangelists”, sooner of later you’ll lose your brand. (How many ipods and iphones are we supposed to buy in the next years?).

Eric, tape is just a – reliable, I hope – backup for me. 1 hour DVCProHD is 60Giga. It takes circa 80′ for Tandberg VXA-320 FW External Tape Drive to transfer them in a cassette. It’s an overnight job for Retrospect software. Archiving a tapeless format is anyway a nightmare: as you know, there is not a single really reliable hard drive. VXA tape is certified for 30 years. Who really knows? In just one year I lost 6 different hard disks, for a total of 4Terabytes of video. Obviously I had a backup for everyone on them, but in one case the backup hdd drive died the day after. And I lost the footage of two interviews for a docu (fortunately the docu was already on a master tape for the broadcaster). I think that the long-term archiving of the tapeless footage will be the big challenge of the next years…
