The D10AD may do the trick, I see. I realize I am taking a 4×3 shot into the PMW-EX30 and it will likely record with an oval, stretched scope view instead of a round scope view, as it would in widescreen, but then I just simply take it into FCP and rescale it there with the black background. It would be convenient to take the 4×3 right there and put it over a widescreen background, but not essential, unless of course it was a live shoot. But the right switcher would take care of that one. Most of what I shoot is not live, and I can re-scale the footage later. Thanks!

Possibly the reason you’re finding encoding to Flash slow, is because your encoder is slow?

So that worked. I appreciate it. However now XDCam Transfer is not allowing me to see the clip thumbnails. I get an Error message: “The clip could not be saved to the cache as it was an unrecognised format.” I’m using 2.9.0 XDCam Transfer. Is there a newer version and do you know where I can find it? This is the first time I have used these since I upgraded the system to 10.6. It seems to be importing though.

Thanks for all of this info. Cache-A is selling for about $9,500.00 and it looks versatile for an editing house that runs a lot of projects through and client deadlines might be an issue. However I only need a simple backup in case my drives go down.

Thanks, Jerry. That’s my thinking as well. 50 years of archiving may have my great grandchildren scratching their heads as to why the tapes don’t work after that expanse of time, but for me, I like that and those tapes will live long after I am gone.

So you have me looking at Quantum’s removable LTO-4 HH for $1,600 on Google products. I notice the tapes are about $23.65 for a 400/800 gig tape, which is an excellent price, but what is the “400/800” half-gig amount number all about? Does it produce a better recording if it records in 400 gig mode or what does that number split represent?
And what is the difference between LTO-3 and LTO-4? Or LTO-5 for that matter? Thanks!

I have 24 G-tech drives fat with footage on them presently. I keep buying drives and will soon get a drive array tower as well. My thinking says that as long as I have a footage backup, using mirrored drives is not really necessary. If a drive crashes, all you need is the FCP file and the footage. What do you think?
LTO sounds good and it is also less expensive it seems. Do you know what the shelf life of an LTO tape is?

I shoot some very long surgical procedures with three cameras at times like this. I have never had to shoot 12 hours straight, but close on a few occasions. My technique involves hot swapping SxS cards and ingesting the footage onto an external hard drive through my Mac laptop using XDCam Browser, then once I have verified I downloaded the BPAV folder into its own folder, I erase the SxS card there, then reinsert it into the camera and keep with this seesaw technique. At the end of the day, I use XDCam Transfer to fuse all those cards into one clip. It works pretty well when I need to sync all three cameras too.
