I had a project once where I formatted my text in Illustrator, with each additional title being exactly 100 px below the previous one. Then, in AE, I was able to use expressions tied to the layer number to offset the same source file multiple times and have a different line of text (my title) for each layer.
This method requires AI and some knowledge of how to use it, but has the benefit of being able to exactly format your text– which a plain text file wouldn’t be able to do.

You should have dials in ripple that control the frequency of ripple (as well as others). Ripple runs like a clock, so you won’t be able to adjust individual ripples, unless you slowly keyframe-adjust the frequency to stay on the beat (i.e. for live music). If your music is quantized this shouldn’t be an issue, though.

My logic would say it’s your file, then. Double-check the file in other apps and see if you get the same problem. (in Quicktime or something else).
If it looks good there, it sounds like it’s an interpretation issue. For starters, restart and clear your computer’s brain and make sure it’s not just being a freak on import. Sometimes I run into really weird issues just because my computer gets tired of scrambling for memory.

Is that your on-screen view, or a rendered sample?

March 12, 2010 at 9:34 pm in reply to: adobe premiere and after effects keep crashing!I was on the phone for HOURS with Adobe’s tech support regarding this issue, and I was sad to say that the representatives helping me had no ability to help me except by reciting what was in their “script”. They first thought the issue was with my serial number, so they were asking me to go to pull-down menus under “Help” that actually didn’t exist. I think Adobe hadn’t even provided them with documentation that was up to date on my version of AE and Premiere. When I asked if they could verify what they saw under their Help menu, and the version they were using, they dodged the question revealing that they actually weren’t in front of a working version of the software.
That said, here’s what I know:
I upgraded my motley crew of software to the CS4 suite. Support said this could be the issue, but were unable to help me find the serial number inside my software. This is because somehow our serial numbers are now somewhat detached from our software. Instead our serial number is more like a registration code on their end. The problem with this is that we had no way to tell if I was having a conflict between AECS4 standalone and AECS4 from the bundle, or which serial number my computer thought it was working under.
—IF ANYONE CAN TELL ME WHERE TO FIND MY “CURRENTLY USING” SERIAL NUMBER, THIS WOULD BE APPRECIATED. (I’m not yelling. I’m just separating out the request from the diatribe.)They also had me log-on to Adobe for my serial number, but you may discover that this is not an up-to-date repository of your serial number. This is just a goofy virtual “post-it-note” to dig up old info. Adobe has me registered as using AE6! Obviously this database is not being used to validate my registration.
Try the usual, delete prefs, or even re-install software. And yes, if you try to work standalone-to-bundle, you’ll probably have issues. You can also break the link pretty easily by moving a file or renaming anything. After finally getting a link established between AE and Prem. (imported a prem. comp into AE) I somehow broke it again. AE would hang when loading the file, and after about 4 minutes, either crash or open with a placeholder as my Prem. source, and the “Cannot establish link” warning. I just had to start over from my backup AE file that was pre-linked and try it again.
Good luck. In my experience, this is potentially a great feature that has not been nailed down by Adobe. They need to build in much smarter links that can track external changes in file structure before this will be useful.

If it’s helpful for future ideas…
I had a project that just needed a headline of text replaced (and jersey number) for 42 or so comps. I set up my text in an Illustrator comp, then used the AE comp’s layer number to drive an expression that offset the Y (vertical placement) of the linked AI file the same number of pixels that the lines of text were spaced. This way, when the client added player #43, I only had to add layer #43 to my comp and update my AI file to have a 43rd line of text. //expression said something like “y position is layer number * 50 pixels.

The problem is that my client isn’t confident in their shooting/digitizing abilities, hence them sending me the tape. I sent the tape out, and got back SD footage. Now I can’t figure out who made the mistake– the shooters or the digitizers.
I got my client’s HDV tape from them (shot on standard mini-DV), and it plays in my GL2. Basically looks like widescreen SD.
If my GL2 plays it AT ALL, does that confidently mean it’s NOT HDV? Or does it simply mean my GL2 won’t give me anything better than SD when reading it?
Thanks,
