One question is which flavor of 4k are you dealing with?

I’m working primarily with 4k footage shot on a Sony FS7 xvac at 240mbps and I can edit and play back in full resolution on my system without issue or hiccups even with LUTs attached. I’m on a PC. My media lives on a 12T OWC Thunderbay set to Raid0 and I have an Nvidia GTX970 graphics card to make use of CUDA.

Duke, i too have experienced the ASIO/MME switching. not sure why.

Michael, it still sounds like a random permissions issue but I’m not sure why it pops up randomly.

The error message contains the answer to your issue. “Please check write permissions” is telling you that the folder that you’ve chosen to use for autosave doesn’t have the correct permissions set. Go to that folder, get info on the folder, go to sharing and permissions at the bottom of the info window and give all users read & write access to the folder. You can also open the settings button which is just below the account names and apply these new permissions to everything inside the folder.

I think we’re in agreement Jody. I create master files in DNxHD 10bit so that any and all flavors of compressions will be as high a quality as possible.

It’s hard to determine how buggy Premiere is due to the fact that many of the issues raised here on the forums tend to be localized problems.

My experience with Premiere has mainly been a matter of adjusting preference settings or learning workarounds for issues that on first glance appear to be program bugs.

I guess I’m confused by what the need would be for a mezzanine export. Storage is now incredibly cheap and so dedicating a drive to archive individual projects makes the archiving process easy.

I think it bears another mentioning that if you are working with Premiere on a newer computer with a supported graphics card, a solid amount of RAM and a fast media drive/raid, there should be no need to transcode any media. One of the great things about Premiere is that it can handle virtually any kind of media on the fly.

You’re definitely lacking in RAM but also are you making use of the Mercury Playback Engine (CUDA)? That’s one of the main keys to smooth media playback.

With video files you’re best option is to bring them into media encoder and create H264 versions which will be a mere fraction of the original size.
