no Adobe program will open the avi file. and yes, the pro res works just fine. Simple solution, avoid using the avi option.

All good info John. One warning though, editing with H264 files will cause your system performance to go down dramatically. Play back of H264 requires a lot of CPU processing so whenever possible, transcode H264 files to something much more edit friendly like pro res or DNxHD.

you have an old CPU so your performance will lag behind any newer system but your main problem with this project is that you’re attempting to play back seven layers of H264 files.

Transcode those mp4 files to pro res or dnxhd and you’ll see a dramatic improvement in play back on your system.

The differentiating factor of the imac pro is it’s ability to run FCPX (and run it very fast.) If you use Adobe cloud, Resolve and other cross platform software, there’s a variety of other less expensive options for maximizing power and speed.

You’re obviously well-versed in all things computer related so forgive me if you’ve already tried these things…

Where are you rendering your exports to? your spec list only lists one ssd drive which I would guess is your OS. Do you have a media drive?

Does the problem also occur if you send a Premiere sequence to AME?

Have you also looked at your event logs to see if there’s any indication as to the source of the crash?

I would experiment with exporting to a variety of drives (usb, ssd, Thunderbolt) to see if it’s a thru put issue.

I read his review and you’re right it is interesting.

He added this at the end: “At the end of the day: we’re going to have to become proficient w ALL NLEs – Final Cut Pro. X, Adobe Premiere, Davinci Resolve and … well no: Not Sony Vegas …sorry. Is that still around?”

From a freelancer’s perspective though, the need to be proficient on FCPX is the lowest priority due to it’s lack of presence in post facilities.

I completely agree. My switch to a PC work environment was predicated on this notion that my upgrade needs will be fewer overall and when they do arise I can swap out components and not be required to purchase an entire new system.

import into premiere then drag that clip onto the “new item” icon (bottom right corner of project window.) It will create a sequence that matches the clips settings. Add 1 sec black on both sides and then send it to Media Encoder by selecting export media.

great, now every single time you open premiere check to make sure your project is autosaving to the correct location. then make sure you’re also saving a version to adobe cloud and you’ll never post about this problem again.
