No one cares what NLE was used to make any film. The only folks who find it interesting are the marketing teams at Avid and Adobe.

Bill, you’re right about Apple services being a growing part of the overall but as this chart shows they remain primarily a phone company.

Great thread. Thanks for everyone’s input.

For me the real barometer of future computer trends is looking at what kids want to purchase. I have teenagers and when they were young, the devices they craved were ipods, iphones and ipads. The Apple mystique had fully permeated our culture and kids perceived Apple as the definition of cool.

But my son who is almost 16 just shared with me a parts list from PC Part Picker that he researched and he’s getting very excited to build a custom PC. Most of his friends also have custom PC’s. The obvious reason is for gaming but this younger generation is also getting a taste of what the PC world has to offer – i.e., freedom of choice and I think that freedom will be something that they will want going forward.

People can argue forever about how big Apple’s business is and how relevant they will remain but it’s simply undeniable that Apple is first and foremost a phone company. They are also a computer company but that part of the business is large but technically still niche and the trend that I see all around me is that they are becoming even more niche.

But you should also transcode that H264 to pro res, dnxhd or cineform for a much easier workflow.

Your first step should be to transcode the P2 media into an edit friendly codec – pro res, dnxhd or cineform.

If your problem remains with the transcoded footage then most likely you have compatibility issues- i.e., drivers not being updated, etc.

Let your work dictate your technology. If you get a big project use the extra money to upgrade.

16 gigs ram is a start. 32 or 64 gigs is better.

If you’re a professional, you owe it to your clients to be up to date with software. The savings you’re enjoying by having CS6 and not CC is offset by the fact that you’re simply not prepared to take on a variety of projects with all different types of media.

Robert, John’s advice is correct. It’s called a FCP xml but in reality it’s just an xml file that can easily be read by any other NLE and it’s the easiest way to move from one NLE to another mid-project.

However, keep in mind that any monetary savings that you’ll gain by switching to Resolve will probably be negated by the learning curve of the new NLE. You might want to at least finish your current project in Premiere and then learn Resolve before you make the switch.
