You should do a google search on making proxies to get up to speed. There’s no issue with the Canon C300 and making proxies in Premiere. Premiere can make proxies from virtually any camera type. If you’re having issues it means there’s something problematic on your system.

Also, the main benefit of proxies is reducing the CPU load when editing. However, if you create H264 file proxies you’ll run into heavy CPU load due to H264 being a CPU intensive format. You’ll have much better overall performance if you stick to using Cineform as your proxy format.

Moving forward you should abandon the legacy title tool. Duplicating titles is very easy when using the new title workflow.

Click on the title tool, start typing your first title, now option (or control, I can’t recall which) click on the title in your timeline and drag the title left or right and it will create a new duplicated title. Move your timeline playhead to the new title, click on new title, change text. repeat.

Accusonus plugins are a much better option than Izotope RX7 if you’re using Premiere. Izotope plugins can wreak havoc on a Premiere system. There’s currently a bug with the Izotope RX7 plugins that can cause hard computer crashes if you’re working on a mac system. I haven’t used the RX7 plugins on a pc but I would suspect that the bug is cross platform.

The one way to minimize the crashes with Izotope plugins is to up the audio buffer to 2048 but even that doesn’t completely stop the hard crashes. This problem is without any indication within Premiere so it may take awhile for someone to realize that it’s the Izotope plugins that are causing problems.

  • and you ‘ve done a speed test on the La Cie raid to make sure you’re getting proper thruput?

Also, the spinning beachball issue with delayed playback is almost always a communication issue with the media source (i.e., raid).

  • [Andrew Kimery] “That’s a good point too. One project I worked on got completely brought to it’s knees by the iZotope filters I was using (just basic denoisers) and when I contacted iZotope they basically said, “Yeah… we really, really, *really* recommend you export those clips and bring them back in.””

I’m not sure if the Izotope folks are fully aware of how problematic their plugins can be with Premiere. I’ve been working at a client location where initially I was on a trash can mac and more recently it was upgraded to a new imac pro. Both of these systems were repeatedly plagued by seemingly random hard crashes that drove me completely batty.

IT support determined that the crashes were being triggered by Izotope plugins. Those plugins are really fantastic but I’ve been forced to eliminate them completely from my Premiere workflow due to the fact that they can cause massive system instability as well as the fact that they require a lot of CPU power.

  • Do you use audio plugins at all in your timeline? Audio effects can bring any system to a grinding halt due to the real time processing required to play back.

If the timeline is completely filled with pro res proxy files then like Andrew previously stated there’s simply no logical reason to have dramatic performance issues.

  • Merged clips destroys the connection to the original audio media. Do a search on
Google. There’s a lot of info on why you should avoid using merged clips.

Multicam source sequences act the same as clips. It’s non-destructive and it’s the way to sync secondary audio

  • If you still have the option and time, all audio should be married with the video through creating multicam source sequences and not merged clips. Merged clips is a destructive function that really should be eliminated from Premiere.

None of this effort is necessary anymore due to the AI speech analysis options that are now available online. Transcriptive, Temi and other services are so good that there’s no need to use these old methods.

[Bill Davis] “So I’m pretty happy with these WWDC announcements. Onward and upward!”

Bill, you missed your true calling which is being a politician. You swiftly sidestepped the main issue of cost and redirected the focus to FCPX. Well played.
