[Andy Neil] ” I don’t think it’s fair to blame FCPX for not being able to use your OWC raids”

The point of bringing that into the critique is simply comparing the FCPX experience to Premiere. My raids work just fine on my pc and mac with premiere. They are ntfs and I wouldn’t imagine that it would be an issue at all in FCPX but it is.

[Andy Neil] “Apple chose to focus solely on the editing with FCPX”

yes, and it’s the strongest aspect of the program. But editing the material is only half of the journey.

[Andy Neil] “What features are no-brainers in Premiere”

exporting a H264 with detailed compression settings like bitrate limiting. And i know i can push it to compressor but then another app purchase needs to be made. Kind of a slippery slope if you want to think of FCPX as a bargain app.

  • A general rule is to trash your cache files regularly. it may or may not solve your dilemma but it certainly can’t hurt.

  • what kind of drive are you accessing the media from? Performance with a large project like yours will primarily be determined by your thru put speed. Is it on a fast raid?

Is the titler still sluggish if you turn off your underlying video layer in your timeline?

[John Rofrano] “Take the time to learn the new program and move forward. It is a safer approach and you might even find new features that make life a lot easier.”

This is great advice. Computers are a convenience that require the user to embrace change. The rewards to staying current with OS updates and software updates are endless.

Michael, I agree that the idea of not having an edit system connected to the internet or having a second computer for web use is completely impractical. I also recently switched to a PC after 20 plus years on a mac and it’s hard to get used to the idea of your computer being vulnerable since macs tend to be exempt.

My edit workflow is a continual combination of internet acquired media (music, sound effects, pictures and video) and also local media on a raid. I couldn’t function efficiently if I had my edit system offline.

But naturally it does add risk. All of Chris’s suggestions are spot on. I also use a vpn on my home system and a malware monitoring program.

Both Vimeo and Frame.io allow notes that are marked by timecode and both work well.

  • Since you’re about to embark on upgrading your raid you might want to think about going with Raid10 instead of Raid5. You would lose half of your raid to mirroring but you would also have a safer raid overall. I have two OWC Thunderbays set up in Raid10 and they’re working well.

Here’s an article explaining why Raid10 is preferred over Raid5:

  • a quick fix would be to make all of your titles outside of premiere and then import them.

any chance you can project manage a bit and thin it out? You can also delete caches within premiere.

thanks for the suggestion to use Switch. It works perfectly and it’s a great replacement for VLC which has been problematic for awhile in that it can’t play back mxf files smoothly on my system.
