Automatic Duck is a fantastic program for exporting a sequence from FCP to AE — but it costs money. You might be able to find a script that does it for free. Just google “After Effects XML import” and I’m sure you’ll find a bunch of ways to do it.

Are you rendering this out to be used in another program? If you’re using Final Cut Pro, there is a solution.
In Final Cut Pro there a few compositing modes (screen, overlay, soft light, etc). Just render out the animation to a quicktime with an alpha channel, bring it into your FCP timeline on the layer above the one you want to key over, then right click on your mouse and select the appropriate compositing mode. Viola!

There’s a fix? Where did you get it?

What you have on your hands is not a DVD video disc, but a DVD data disc — so it won’t play as a DVD in a set-top player.
The .dvr files you have are files recorded using a Closed-Circuit video recorder. From my experience, a lot of times, because of the way the systems record these “videos”, you need to use a proprietary application to view them (hence the .exe file). You’ll need a .dvr converter application to be able to convert the .dvr files to a usable file type to be able to edit them.
Just google “.dvr converter” and a whole host of apps come up — some free. DVR-MS Converter is one such program, but it looks like it only runs on a PC.

I took the Advanced After Effects class with FMC. It was ok. In my class at least, the instructor pretty much just went through one of the existing AE training books out there (After Effects Apprentice in my case). I found that I didn’t get much out of the class — maybe my expectations were too high. I’ll admit, though, that the benefit of the instructor led class is that you get to ask questions and get input (which you can’t get from a book).
In my experience, nothing has improved my abilities in AE more than the hundreds of free tutorials available on the web. (videocopilot.net, AEtuts.com, allbetsareoff.com, and here on the Cow).

Assuming your current comp is the same aspect ratio (4×3 or 16×9, etc) as what you desire, you could also run the “scalecomp” action script. This works pretty well and does all the scaling for you without the “null object”.
click on “File”, then “Scripts\Run Script File…”
The action script is in “scripts\(demos)” folder in your AE folder.
Cheers!
