In After Effects I cannot use CC Particle world anymore. Every time I try to apply it After Effects crashes. I just installed CS4 on my new Mac Pro and it just won’t let me use it. Any thoughts on how to fix this. I have tried repairing the install but it still does not work.

i’m not sure if cc particle world tries to use opengl for accelerated previews, but you might try disabling opengl in preferences>previews. just uncheck the use opengl option and set accelerate previews to adaptive resolution.

this should prevent effects from accessing opengl which often helps preview/render problems in ae. also, disabling opengl for previews will allow multiprocessing for previews which is normally of greater value to more effects than opengl.

Yar, but you’re going to need to determine what other effects crash AE. You’ve got some testing to do before you can start debugging.

I tried doing that but it still crashes anytime I try and apply it.

P.s. I am running a Mac Pro Dual Quad Core system. What are the best settings for running AE. Should I leave OpenGL off?

I just tried every single one and Particle world is the only one that makes AE crash.

i leave opengl disabled… i’ve found that most of the benefits are lost once you encounter stability problems. throw in the fact that if it is enabled, it will disable multiprocessing for previews and it’s pretty easy for me to leave it off….

i’m using a dual 2.8 quad mac pro with cs4 too, and i’m not having any trouble with particle world… you’re using the version that ships with ae (vs. the version that can be purchased form cycore)?

have you tried a different comp size? just curious if it might work with an sd comp vs an hd comp….

have you tried enabling or disabling multiprocessing? preferences>memory & multiprocessing, check the option for render multiple frames simultaneously… i have mp on here (again, with no problems).

also, do you have the latest version of cs4? there is an update to 9.0.1 that fixed many bugs… (i’m currently running with the update)

I am running without the updates. I will download those and see if that helps. I don’t make any comps in HD. We don’t do HD out yet as its not quite yet worth it for what we are doing.

I installed the update and I still have the same issue. I changed all the settings like you said. Tried many variations, but nothing seems to work. I guess I better just buy Trapcode.

    Lucas,

Please also report any issues directly to us at support@cycorefx.com. It will make easier for us to fix them and in shorter time. It will be pretty difficult for us if we have to scan all forums on daily basis to find bugs.

    Two things you can try.

    • If you have re-installed/upgraded AE you good tip is to delete the AE pref files. Launch AE while holding shift-cmd-option(alt) and you will be asked to delete or go to ~/user/Library/Preferences/Adobe/After Effects/9.0 and delete manually.

    • Delete “Particle World prefs” from ~/user/Library/Preferences/ manually.

Let me know how it goes.

Nils, thanks for monitoring the forum. Wish more mfrs and publishers of plugs would do that.
Hope you can help this guy.
Particle World rocks! (but i miss those obsolete old particle filters, too)

    David,

    Thanks for the kind words.

You can actually get to the old particle systems by creating a preset. To make that easier for you we’ve made two preset “Classic Particle Systems FFX” that you can download here, https://www.cycorefx.com/dloads_ccfx.php. Put them in your presets folder and you can apply those to any layer, it’s “almost” like a standard plug-in 😉
