I consider myself a strategic partner with my clients, not just a video company. That being said, I would tell them that this is in extremely poor taste, and I would think long before committing to creating this spot. Sometimes it’s not all about the money.

Thanks Mark! The type of client I’m looking for is a medium to large corporate client, or manufacturing client. We also produce videos for medical companies.

I think what separates us from other production companies is that I have over 25 years producing corporate videos in the area of training, marketing, communications, etc. And we’re used to working with corporate clients and their executive team.

When I worked as the “in-house” for Burger King Corporation, I would do Google searches to find other production companies who could help me. But I’m finding that our ads are costly and not paying off.

I’m wondering how I can go about contacting the decision makers in large companies to get more work, and repeat business. How can I communicate to these companies that I am in their niche?

You don’t need a license to report your earnings. But you should ALWAYS have a contract that includes everything you’re providing. For example, location(s), length of time you’ll be there. Meals, parking fees. What you are delivering to them.

Have them initial each page and sign the last page. Also, get a deposit up front and final payment should always be due before you deliver the final video to them. Include that in your agreement.

Even a Craigs list cash deal should have a contract. Even if you hand write it.

You should mention in your agreement that you are not licensed, so the customer can acknowledge that, just in case they want to dispute something. You should check with a lawyer.

You should report your earnings to the government, since that’s legally what’s required.

She just needs to give you the raw footage. Send her a small USB hard drive and let her put the raw footage on the drive and send it to you. Never accept compressed footage. That’s not what you paid for.

It depends on what your editing system can use. She may have asked about Frame Rate. In that case it was already decided once she recorded it. Not knowing what editing platform you use, makes it difficult to tell you what to ask for. What formats do you typically shoot and edit? Tell her you just want the raw footage in that format. She shouldn’t be asking about bit rates and file sizes, it’s all based on the footage she shot. If she gives you a specific file size, then she’s compressing the footage and it’s no longer “raw”
