Also, can you show the 4-way split of the screen – perspective, top, front, right.
With 3D items, the position of the layer in the stack does not matter – it’s about making sure the light is placed in front of the layer in 3D space. If it’s on the same plane or on a plane behind the image, then the light wouldn’t hit it at all.

Prelude works off of the Preset list in AME. The AVID codecs do not have a preset already so you will have to manually add a preset that includes the settings you want to use. You can add a custom preset in AME, then you will see that listed in Prelude.

Try copying the entire file structure off the card and onto your hard drive. Then, use the Media Browser to get the files out of that directory. Do not try to import the video files directly.

It’s a different workflow within Premiere. What I would recommend doing, is make razer cuts on your in and out points. Then you can context click on the newly created clip and choose ripple delete.

Yes, you could do that with footage, but if you want to create it in AE, Fractal Noise would work well. Play with the settings to get a good look for the footage, then animate the Offset Turbulence to give the appearance of motion. You will want to offset with a high value to get the speed of the original shot.
I couldn’t see what you wanted in the second video – the link didn’t copy over correctly.

If you want strong performance, your best bet is to use a RAID configuration.

Once you replace your footage with an AE Comp, that comp will show in Premiere just like a normal clip. So you can keep editing your movie inside of Premiere.
Your workflow is great when working with individual clips. Your friend’s workflow is more for the finalized edit. Both are valid.
You are correct, his workflow does mean he has to render out of AE.
