Take a look at Kata bags. They have a bag finder thing on their site that’ll help find the right one for your needs. Last year a purchased the Kata bumblebee for my hvx-200. The bag is great. I’ve been able to fit it in the overhead of all types of commercial aircraft, which makes my life a bit easier. But I guess the question is what kind of bag are you looking for? shoulder bag? backpack?

Jeff brought up a good point – Disk Speed. Maybe your disks are 5400 rpm instead of 7200? Whenever I buy a disk I don’t even consider the 5400rpm disks. Esata would be great, but why won’t it work on your mac pro?

I’ve been through pretty much this same problem… The bottom line is external drives that run on usb or firewire are a pain. If you add effects or multiple layers of video in HD, you’ll end up with the pinwheel of death, or have to render every five minutes (and if your computer isn’t fast enough, you’ll still end up with the pinwheel of death).
The best thing to do is switch everything over to a second internal drive (not your startup disk). Just copy and paste your files from your external drive to the new caviar maintaining the same file structure. Then reset your scratch disk in FCP. The sooner you get away from externals like that, the better your footage will play in FCP.
Ideally you’d want to use multiple disks in a raid so that each file is saved over several disks. That way multiple disks can send data at the same time as opposed to just one doing all the work.
Also, USB 2.0 (480Mb/s) is actually faster than firewire 400 (400Mb/s). If you’re using USB 2.0 and Firewire 400, that could be it. I don’t know much about USB 3.0 vs firewire 800, so if you’re using those, i’m not sure…

You might find easier results by using a compositing application like motion or AFX. It’s kind of hard for me to imagine exactly what you’re thinking of, but I think the answer to your question might like in overlaying the shadow on top of your subject and changing the blend mode to multiply? At least that’s how I’d approach it. Best of luck.

Does Frames do a better job at rate conversion than compressor? I ask because i’ve only ever used compressor.

From what I understand, it has to do with interlaced vs progressive. I recall reading a few years back an article in a magazine – can’t remember which one it was – where they did a comparison with a dollar bill. the footage apparently looked more crisp with 720p than 1080i. So I think for your question the fact that you’re starting with interlaced footage puts you behind the mark compared to progressive, even though it is at a higher resolution – so i understand.-Grant Gomm

Honestly I think it would be better to do the keying in a different program – especially if you want to use a mask. I actually didn’t even know keylight worked inside FCP. But i’ve had a lot of luck with it in AE. Just make sure to render out color + Alpha. Just my thoughts. Hope that helps.
