  • Yes, I just read that elsewhere, and all I can say is “That’s totally daft!”

  • Indeed – just like how BMD keep emailing firmware updates to their cards to give extra new functionality. I’ve never really seen this applied to a camera, but there’s no reason why not, I suppose.

  • Noah, are you saying that in 1080p24, the HDX200 will record with 3:2 pulldown to P2? Or are you saying it just records the 24 unique frames per second.

  • No reason why they couldn’t invent it, free from the constraints of tape based formats. It would probably be pretty pointless putting it on a cheaper camera, but it would be nice if they’re working on something like this for their flagship models.

I think you mean $2000, Jan? And that in the meantime it’s dropped $300. Lets hope it drops a lot more at NAB….

  • DVCproHD supports 1080i60, which if it were a normal tape camera could have 24p “embedded” just as we embed 24p into NTSC 60i on a DVX100. But, as far as we know, this P2 camera doesn’t embed the data in a higher frame rate, but, instead, just records the individual frames. The codec, being the type tha compresses each individual frame seperately doesn’t really care about frame rate – decks do, but there is no deck here.

  • It doesn’t sound like there’s a camera that meets all those needs. For standard def there’s the SDX900, but that doesn’t do plain DV, and on the Sony side, a decent DigiBeta would meet the quality requirements, but not get you DV25. Do Sony even do an even vaguely affordable camera with 24p??

What I’m liking about the HDX200 is that it does DVCpro50, which is an awesome quality codec for SD use, and along with, hopefully a very good 1080p24, that should really help give the camera the ultimate in picture flexibility.

  • Indeed, I think we can all invisage such a product. Bigger chips, better glass, direct to P2, perhaps like the HDX200 with all the funky modes. Sounds like yet another killer product.

  • Don’t worry Luis, we’ll report back all our findings. Throughout the history of NLEs, capturing video has always been the biggest pain, be it the expense of a deck, dropped frames or audio sync issues. I’ll be glad to see that pain gone!

I know we’re all uncertain on the workflow, but we’ll figure it out, other products will come out that will help etc. Personally, I’m finding this ever so exciting.

  • Jan – very much looking forwards to meeting you, and the camera at NAB. Thanks for welcoming us to the forum, and thanks for being around to answer our questions, and as you say, talk about the details of the camera itself as soon as we get the official launch at NAB.

I’m quite a firm believer that solid state tapeless diskless aquisition is the way to go. I know people have questions about price and workflow, and I still find myself a little unsure at times as to how things will work, but it does seem that P2 is a very much ahead of it’s time technology that the industry as a whole is going to have to catch up to.
