What if Panasonic came out with a codec that records HD with half the compression of DVCProHD? It seems completely possible technically, especially at 24 fps. It would have less compression than HDCAM.

No reason why they couldn’t invent it, free from the constraints of tape based formats. It would probably be pretty pointless putting it on a cheaper camera, but it would be nice if they’re working on something like this for their flagship models.

The question is whether the HVX is setup in such a way that firmware updates are possible. If there’s some kind of PRAM inside the camera that a P2 card could communicate with and send software updates- that would make compression rate changes entirely possible. Please bring that question to NAB. 🙂

Indeed – just like how BMD keep emailing firmware updates to their cards to give extra new functionality. I’ve never really seen this applied to a camera, but there’s no reason why not, I suppose.

This is one of the most groundbreaking things I see in the future of solid state recording. We’ve never seen this applied to a camera because it’s complicated by the limitations that come with using a tape transport. But once that’s taken out of the equation, the only real limitation seems to be the datarate the cards can handle.

    Exciting times.

Can’t make it to NAB this year. You guys will have to ask for me!
I should have said “twice the data rate” not “half the compression”.
