I think a few companies are now coming to market with Firewire to HD SDI boxes for the Sony HDV, but I still think it’s amiss of Sony to call the deck “pro” and not have pro connectors on it – whatever were they thinking?

It all depends on how the SD footage is upconverted – there are good upconverters, medium ones, and bad ones. I’m working on a software up-converter that I hope (and early tests show) should be in the “superb” category. If you ever get to see a Terranex or Snell and Wilcox upconverter in action, I reckon you might find it hard to tell the difference between good SD and HDV. Sony were telling us at their demo of the Z1 in Ottawa that upconverted DSR570 footage looked better than the Z1, for instance.

I think that kind of edit function would be excellent without introducing an 1984 type effect. I think that’s how the Apple forums work, if I remember rightly.

As I say, I don’t think FCP itself is going to benefit, but we’ll know soon, eh? As for compatible – I’ve not head anything to the contrary, and again, I’ll know better when it arrives and I have it installed.

Good points. I reckon there’s a real economy of scale in what Panasonic will be doing, especially if the interest allready in this camera is anything to go by. Still, in a 1/3″ chip HD camera, the lens will be a limiting factor no matter what (fixed, removable), I think.

Or a Decklink card too should work. Couple that with an HDLink and a 23″ Cinema Display, and you’re laughing for HD monitoring.

I don’t think FCP5 is doing much in the way of GPU accelleration or else you’d find it very slow to see what you’re doing out of your capture card, due to the slow speed of the AGP buss going backward. I think we’ll have to wait for PCI-Express before we get good GPU stuff in FCP.

Use PhotoJPEG codec 75% or even 50% should be good enough quality to show me what’s going on.
