It is possible. If all 500 images are the same size/resolution then you can do it with an action, if they vary you will need to do it with a script. You can email me off the list to get the details figured out.

Not exactly sure what you are trying to achieve with the B&W of the Background, but to address the other issue, no, the background layer is not always locked. If you double click on it and rename it Layer 0, it just becomes a layer.
