The results are consistent. My brain is turning to mush.

All three Kona captured clips came in the same. They also matched the clips from yesterday.

I also did three normal HDV via Fire wire clips using the HDV easy set up. They were different from the AJA settings. They all came in the same as each other and in sync with the tape. I also captured one clip via Firewire to Pro Res and that matched the HDV clips.

So through firewire the clips seem fine. Through the Kona 3 via the HD SI the audio is two frames off and the video is four frames off.

I have captured the same clip a bunch of times but not always with the same settings. But It seems fairly constant.

I will try it three times with the same easy set up first thing tomorrow morning.

    Thanks for your help.

I had not paid attention to the audio, everything I was capturing was all b-roll. I went back and captured a slate and it seems that the audio might be on, but the video is three frames off. When I view it in the camera the slate hits at 1:01:48:01. The captured audio first bit of noise is at 01:01:48:01 and the video hits at 01:01:48:04.

This is using the “AJA Kona 3- 1080i 29.97 DVCPro HD” easy setup.

Even though the Kona 3 is the only thing I would have connected to the sync generator, am I running around in circles until I get one?

I know how much everyone love to rush out and get the latest updates, so I will jump under the bus with this one. I am between projects right now and I just installed a Kona 3 last week so I don’t have much to compare it to (look for my other posts as I get it all dialed in).

So far it does seem better at least the three hours I played around today it did run stable. I used the desktop out feature and that worked fine. Before the update I was having trouble with log and capture not playing back video, I would get audio and TC but no picture. I think it had something to do with the control setting in the control panel. I had to change the settings for log and capture, and then back again for regular playback. That does not seem to be an issue anymore. I don’t know if it is an improvement, or if I just finally got everything set right. (I am going from HDV through a Convergent Design SI to HD-SDI in)

I do like the option to hide some of the output settings. Boy that was one long drop down menu. I’ll let you all know about the RED settings once I get to the top of the waiting list.

The previous post about SATA was to suggest you add an eSATA or a firewire card like the one you posted.

Your FW 400 is more than enough bandwidth to capture DV. Any problems you are encountering is probably from capturing directly to your systems disk. You should have an external hard drive to capture your files to. It is best if your external drive is not on the same firewire bus as your camera. So you could go with either an eSATA card and hard drive, or the card you posted as well as a FW 800 drive.

Thanks Jeremy, No worries on the bad news. I guess I will just use the G5 for editing and not capturing.

But the Kona 2 would work for capturing DVCProHD via SDI with a dual 2.0 G5? Some project I get are on DVCProHD and I will be outputting to this as well.

I am currently working mostly with HDV from a Sony Z1 camera. I have been capturing to ProRes via firewire. This works great on the MacPro, (real time) and OK on the G5 (about 25% slower)

I want to start working with some better formates than HDV, considering the EX3. I am also getting more projects from other sources on DCVProHD and HDCam. So I would like to add the abaility to use SD/HD SDI.

The G5 is still a good machine, I just want to get the most out of it. I might just keep using the MacPro for capturing and finish, and the G5 for off line and basic cuts.

*Maybe its just the imac that does the prores at about 25% slower.

That sounds like it should work. This was one of those things that seemed like it should not be that difficult, but for some reason, I could not get it to do what I wanted it to do.

    Thanks for your help.

Thanks Peter. I ended up sending two files to FCP and applied the shatter effect there. I will try your suggestion also it sounds like a better idea the what I ended up doing.

  • I had this same kind of thing happen, but I am still on 10.5.2. I was able to narrow it down to one clip that was giving me trouble. It was just b-roll so I used a different shot. I wish I had tried the render manager. The shot played fine on it’s own it was just trouble with a lower third that needed to be rendered.

So this may not be a problem with 10.5.3
