Hi Jeff, you’re not being a pain at all, i’m glad you’re cleraing this up for me. I guess I’m confused given the various responses. my confusion stems from the fact that I don’t quite understand what the project prop’s resolution settings actually do in relation to the source clip’s resolution.

If I get what you’re saying…
I should bring in my 1280 footage, and then set my project properties to 720. This will allow me to crop while maintaining quality. (output in 720)
Is this correct?

Yes, I got it Jeff. It makes a lot of sense. As mentioned, I’ll keep my projects at 1080 and render at 720.

I’ll try doing some zooms/pans in my next project. This should allow me to mimic a dolly shot.

On 1920×1080 footage, what’s the most I can crop while maintaining good quality as I render to 720?

From what I understand, if we leave the project prop at 1080, we can then do some panning, cropping, etc without losing resolution.

Do you find this to be an issue if/when the the props are set to 720 and you pan/crop?

I like the idea of having some ‘play’ in zooming in in post and cropping without getting a hit on quality.

Let me ask then… are there any reasons to use the ‘A’ approach above?

I had completely forgot the “render to new track” function. Thanks for brining it up. not sure when I ‘ll use it but good to have in my toolkit.

Before I got your input, I tried fbnm’s color match on my svp11. The whole reason for potentially purchasing it was to save time. Alas, After watching the how-to video and trying it, I was not successful with it. I thought I was doing something wrong. Your post confirms a problem.

I opted not to report it back to Frederic as I had to get going with my project and didn’t have the luxury of spending much time with fbnm
s color match.

If anyone has another formula/tip for efficient color matching, I’ all ears 🙂
