Why don’t you try to mask out the foot.It’s sipmle enough to use the pen tool and I’m pretty sure you’ll get the needed result.

Well a nice and easy way is to use mask,and then using a little bit of rotoscoping and voalla.

For nice nuclear explosions you can use the Wondertouch application – Particle Illusion,it has not only great presets,but it’s not so hard to work with.
