It appears that you are a G5 user so it’s not an issue fro you BUT if you are thinking of getting a MBP or a MacPro you will see some performance degradation running AE as it will not be native. Adobe has not discussed the plan for a universal binary version of AE that I have seen so keep that in mind.
You can run the PC version of AE in bootcamp btw and it really flys 🙂 As a matter of fact, The 3.0 MacPro is currently oen of the fastest AE machines available…when operated under a Bootcamp installation of Windows.

Thanks for the info Boyd. 4.5 looks like it will work.

Is that 4.5 you are referring to or 5?

Did you use your academic STP serial number to install with or did they provide a new one?

[boydmcc] “For those who shouldn’t be using the academic version, or plan on moving into a pro environment in the near future, it might be worthwhile to see if you can purchase a legitimate stand alone, non-academic version of either DVD SP, Soundtrack, Motion or an older version of FCP 4.5, then spend an additional $199 for the crossgrade. You’ll then be able to get into the non-academic FCP studio environment for around the price of an academic license.”
Has anyone upgraded from the upgrade versions of these tools like the Upgrade fro STP? Just curious if the install disc asks for the upgrade serial or the software serial number that you upgraded from (aka the original).

Unless you need the portability, the desktop will always be the better option in terms of money. The MacPro is $2,500 anda dell 20″ monitor run under $300 now.

Yeah, I know that option is there but I find the portability of the 17″ to be awkward. It’s not too heavy for a 17″ but it’s just big – dimensionally speaking. I carry mine around too much for that and place it in tight spots. The 15″ slips into almost any bag I have (with a sleeve on it of course) and is no bigger than the sketch pad I carry.
My bias probably dose not apply here however as Brian clearly mentioned it being pretty stationary. In that case, I would certainly look into a desktop solution. for the price of the 17″ you could get a Macpro and a monitor…or a well decked out 24″ iMac.

Specs-wise, I would personally only consider the 24″ iMac as it has the FW800 port which will be important to try to expand storage while maintain your ability to injest footage.
OTOH, the MBP will give you the most flexibility for freelancing. I use a MBP and it goes everywhere with me and I could not live without the flexibility. I also plan to add a MacPro (already have PC workstations) for the edit suite but, honestly the only reason is for expansion as the MBP is a really solid performer. Motion is more fluid running on the MBP than my previous dual G5.
