Academic Version?
Posted by Richard Boddington on November 14, 2006 at 2:28 amHi,
I assume there is no difference between FCP and what Apple calls the FCP Academic version?
It’s the same software with the same features, right?
Thanks

Hope this helps-

November 14, 2006 at 2:32 amAcademic versions are non-upgradeable. That is you cannot upgrade from Academic Version 4 to Full Version 5. You must purchase the full retail version of the next version of FCP.
Academic versions are not to be used for profit, only by students attending an accredited school. It’s illegal to be used for profit and certainly not something you want to be caught doing.

November 14, 2006 at 3:23 amYes you will get 5.1, but you will receive the Academic Version. When and if a newer version of FCP is released, you can not upgrade to the newer version. Your serial number is tagged as academic.

I have also heard from others that they did not get the accademic version when they did the crossgrade from there origonal academic version.

November 14, 2006 at 4:42 amSo here’s one for you.
What happens when the student filmmaker is no longer a student?
They have the academic version on their computer, and now Apple expects that they will buy the non-academic version, to cut commercial productions with?
I doubt many student loan burdened grads would do that if that’s what Apple expects.

If you want to stay legal you purchase the full retail version. If you want to skirt the law, then that’s up to you.
