I use Captioning and Subtitling International in here in Aus.
captioningandsubtitling.com.au
Has been working out very well with workflows etc. for us. Often going to 10 languages/proj for one client.
Thanks

“How would you react if say, your plumber, mechanic, carpenter etc asked you to sign a non-compete contract?
If you decide to switch to a different barber, or electrician do you ask their permission first?”In all of those cases I’m the client – and therefore can take my money where I like……

“Weren’t the Pharoh’s tombs an excellent example of “state sponsored” artwork? Did these sponsors influence their work? Of course. Did it make their art any less spectacular? No.”
Were the artists all buried alive in their creation at the end of the project?
Is this an easy “in” to a gag about modern commissioning?

There is a middle ground between doing it for free with total control and getting at least some expenses covered. But only if you actually want to do the job below you usual rates i.e. make a loss on the job.
Show them what it would normally costs and then discount it on a one time only basis – all nice and plain to see on the quote paperwork.
Saves you from being the eternal receiver of the lowball job, and you get to maintain a level of control as it’s obvious that you are giving them a big break.
Who know which of the wise COWs lead me to doing this, but I’m pretty sure I picked it up off here at some point.

Thanks Andrew, all fixed – it also sounds like I’m an idiot, should have spotted that one at the outset….

“unless the client expressly gives you the a-ok and takes responsibility”
Pretty sure they can’t actually do this – same as if a company asks you to use music that they don’t have the rights to on the basis of “I say it’s OK, so I’ll be the one that takes the hit”.
Many COW discussions in the Business forum on similar lines have revolved around the idea that you can’t actually hand over the responsibility to the client – if you use it in the film and it’s not legal, you are to blame for using it – no matter what the end user/client says.
In this case there might actually be a view that it’s legal to use the shot, but worth remembering that the client can’t absolve you of responsibility for your actions.

Living in Oz but starting off in the UK – there are many long hauls flights to wait to arrive, depart etc.
I was taught a good long haul trick by an old friend who has many years in the saddle on high end business stuff
“Used to be I’d relax by getting a good wide business class seat. Now I sit in my economy seat, with a drink, counting down the exact amount of savings I’m making by not sitting in business or 1st class………I like to calc it by hour, by day, by minute…..Turns out I can’t earn it as fast as I save it by making this choice. How the hours just fly by…….”

“When a Chinese spokesman can tell a story about a Panamanian or Nigerian or Pakistani cab driver who took him to the airport, then I might concede NYs right to considered the “center of the universe.”
Almost any large European city can say the same thing….Not sure it’s much of a statement to claim you a “melting pot” anymore (or in the last 30 years).
