    To me it reads as though Bill see’s X as something that can live on a small system whereas FCP could only live on a workstation – FCP on a book is very old news. Other software even more so.

    People have been running around doing small edit job on laptops for ages – in studio mattes & cuts, cutting in client office – all no problem.

    This kind of agility isn’t anything to do with the new software.

    Why not both?

    2 revisions (or number you 1st thought of) each equalling 2 max days work….

    It’s hours/days work that’s being quoted for and billed, no reason not to spell it out in the contract & plans.

    Then when you hit the “I’d like to reimagine my project in edit please” you can return to – “Great, sounds fantastic & so long as it takes only 2 days we’ll still be in budget & won’t need to bill the extra hours…..”

    Only because I’m here 1st, but I suspect you are going to get “it’s in the contract right?” as a response to this one.

    Personally I put it in the quote, contract, and the production plan – just so the client knows that anything over a certain point either doesn’t happen & we get paid what was agreed at outset, or is billed on top (or we come to a compromise somewhere between the 2).

    This assumes that there is planned signed off on all the big creative choices as the project has chugged along and aren’t seeing something totally unexpected at the 1st showing/revision stage.

    So for most projects I quote/contract/plan for 2 revision stages – and that’s it. Anything else that’s decided after those 2 meetings and re-cuts get billed. I’m also still very happy to make the slightly artificial distinction between offline and online to mark a point of no return on revisions….

    At which point all paperwork is then forgotten and ignored as the job cracks on with smiles on faces.

    Exactly as it should be.

    It’s only there as a painful and complex backstop when all else has gone wrong for a long time……..

    What does it matter how stable the parent company is financially when it’s the 3rd party bolt on’s that are being depended on to make it work?

    How stable are those guys? You want to lean your workflow on them?

    That sounds like you are behaving as if you weren’t going to pay up and would expect to get into payment conflict with the plumber at some time……….

    Over the years I’ve worked with many suppliers & clients and discussions about non-payers, and their extended fights to get what’s owed have been pretty common over coffee.

    Never made me think any less of them at all. Or that I was in line for a legal beating by working with them – no matter what legal extremes they had had to go to in getting paid.

    Not sure who’d be left to work with if this was a cause for worry, certainly not many that had been around for any real time.

  • What Grin said – ask 1st.

    Few weeks ago I needed to use footage of sports star here in Aus – so I spoke to his agent, and the football org body.

    They all said yes – and for cost of transfer I got 200x what I needed FTP’d in the right format……….

    Life is not always hard & full of lawyers (until you don’t ask).
