I don’t think there is a 3 gig limitation on the Intel chipsets. Sounds like it is more of an Apple issue to me. Hopefully it does support 4 gig of RAM and Apple is under-reporting the capacity until more RAM is available.

Walter, thanks for the advice about staying on the right side of the warranty issue. I will have to check with Apple to see how that would affect the warranty.

I was really hoping that someone might have heard something at the developer conference. I was even thinking that maybe the issue is there aren’t any Apple certified FBDIMMs available yet. I guess we will find out in a few months.

Hi Walter,
I noticed that Apple is selling the ATI 1900 XT as an add on card for 499. If you are itching to try out the new systems like I am then we can always upgrade in a few weeks. Not a bad start since they still haven’t separately released the 7800 GT for the PCI-e G5’s.

Hi Hector,
I think the point is while the system you are talking about may be fast enough for DV, but is isn’t a workstation. You can’t expect a consumer PC to be able to perform the same a real workstation capable of high definition.

A true workstation class computer has enough PCI-X/PCI-e slot to accommodate a high end graphics card and an HD-SDI capture card. If you plan to work with uncompressed HD you will also have find a way to deal with the massive storage requirements for 1080i or 720p. Most current worstations are able to be upgraded to 4 cores and 16 or more GB or RAM. In short if that is in your future you will have to buy a new system.

I like that HP system you bought though. I was thinking about buying one as an HDV ingest system. How is it working out for you?

There was a good review of the Macbook with Final Cut Studio on another site that we aren’t able to link. They were really impressed with it and said that except for its weak Motion performance it almost as fast as the Macbook Pro. The numbers looked so good that it makes it obvious that Apple is playing for keeps.

You might want to give Compressor a try. Apparently the latest version has of the optical flow algorithms originally developed in Shake, and others have reported phenomenal results. But be warned, they have also reported very very slow renders.

What you are talking is crossconversion, which is new feature of the Kona3 card. This card has massively upgraded hardware features that allow to do that amazing cross conversion in real time, along with 2K ingest and editing features. I can’t wait to see how it looks since the only way to get this fuctionality before was with very expensive hardware or with a very very slow software process.

Of course I don’t speak for AJA but from what they have said before it doesn’t seem that the Kona2 and KonaLH have to horsepower to do the crossconversion. I think most owners think they are still awesome cards. The Kona3 costs more because it does more.
