  • HDV 1080i to DVCPro 720p?

Is it possible to capture HDV 1080i footage downconverted for use on a 720p sequence on FCP with KONA LH? (No renders on the timeline). I will be working on a project where we will have both DVCPro HD (720p) and HDV footage mixed in the timeline. Is there an “easy” way to downconvert the HDV 1080i into DVCProHD 720p?. I have tried all the HD presets but nothing seems to work. Does it have to do with the interlacing on the HDV footage (which, by the way, is going in Component analog into the LH)? I was under the impression the KONA LH would be able to re-size while capturing.
Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Hi Mario,
What you are talking is crossconversion, which is new feature of the Kona3 card. This card has massively upgraded hardware features that allow to do that amazing cross conversion in real time, along with 2K ingest and editing features. I can’t wait to see how it looks since the only way to get this fuctionality before was with very expensive hardware or with a very very slow software process.

Of course I don’t speak for AJA but from what they have said before it doesn’t seem that the Kona2 and KonaLH have to horsepower to do the crossconversion. I think most owners think they are still awesome cards. The Kona3 costs more because it does more.
    Hope that helps,
    Gary

[Marigolo] “Is there an “easy” way to downconvert the HDV 1080i into DVCProHD 720p?”

The DVCPROHD codec is also 1080i so why the need for a cross conversion?
Just stay at 1080 for the post using the DVCPROHD codec

the KONA LH does not do the cross conversion as you stated the Interlaced to progressive conversion takes more horsepower than that card was given.

    Thanks guys,
I was sort of hoping to stay in the 720p realm as I will have to work on many graphics for the show and the less rendering time in After Effects the better. I guess I’ll have to experiment with crossconverting via FCP or AE… I’ll let you know…. oh, and yes, the KONA LH is a great card!

    Hi Mario,
You might want to give Compressor a try. Apparently the latest version has of the optical flow algorithms originally developed in Shake, and others have reported phenomenal results. But be warned, they have also reported very very slow renders.
    Good luck,
    Gary
