If I correctly understand the question, dragging an item from your project to the New Comp button will create a comp with the attributes of that item. Dragging an item to a timeline will merely add it to the composition while maintaining it’s original attributes.

As far as I know, the metal-only issue is for recording – your tapes should play back just fine.

I agree with Jeff. One of the beauties of Premiere Pro is that it works with most formats natively, and in the same timeline… no need to change codecs. That’s not to say that you should never transcode – it depends on the project and your system, but in most cases there’s no need to. What version of Premiere? System info?

What happens when you set the canvas to display both fields at once? Regardless, interlaced media always displays with jagged edges on a computer screen but will be just fine on a TV monitor (if you have it connected via an I/O box). Unless it’s for TV, change your sequence setting to 1080p and see if that helps.

If you’re viewing your export on your computer monitor, it’s normal and expected to see the interlacing as you describe. View your export on a regular TV and all should be good.

DVDs are SD. MPEG DVD is the correct choice. If you want HD on discs your only choice is to author a Blu-ray.
