How do you know the sound of the animals is there if you can’t hear it? Perhaps the raw video was shot without audio. Perhaps the sounds were added from a completely separate source during the post-productiion. Also, just because there is a sound track does not necessarily mean there is an audio signal – it may just be a structural requirement of the .vob file (someone with more knowledge in this area may be able to confirm).

A very quick example – this image is comprised of three layers; the bottom layer is white, the middle layer is the photo enlarged so it fills the screen from side to side and then a blur is applied (adjust to taste). I also reduced the opacity to 70% so the white layer shows through (you might also consider using a colour instead of white – or even black). Again, adjust to taste. The top layer is the photo – full frame and angled. For added variety you might also consider setting keyframes on the scale of the top layer to zoom in (or out) on the photo. Experiment a bit… or a lot!

Surely you must have seen what is a quite common solution to this problem – use something other than black as your background layer. More often than not it’s the same photo scaled way up and extremely blurred to provide a textured background – more interesting than just black or solid colour.

Did you create the menu at 720 x 480 – 72 dpi? If not, then DVDSP had to scale it, which it doesn’t do very well.

Did you format the drive for Mac OS? New drives are most often formatted as MS-DOS (FAT 32) which have a file size limitation – this might be your problem.

I Googled “Mac error (-50)” and there’s a number of results that might help you. Other than that my only other thought is one you’ve already had… maybe a failing drive. 🙁 Good luck.

Are you able to plug the drive into another Mac to try and narrow down whether the problem is with the drive or your Mac? How are you connecting the drive (Firewire 800, 400, e-sata)? Bad cable?

Did you make the image 720 x 480 in Photoshop? DVDSP doesn’t scale very well.
