I can’t speak from experience because I don’t actually use FCP, but I’ve lurked around this forum long enough to know that yes, the native files may play in FCP but as you work with your project your computer will start to choke because it just can’t deal with the high compression of these files. Transcoding to a more work friendly codec such as ProRes is the way to go. That’s why the first question Jerry asked was how you transcoded the files. Unless I’m missing something, others with more knowledge than I can surely confirm this. Do a search on transcoding to ProRes and you’ll find all sorts of good advice.

[Jonny Michel] “I have played the footage back in both PP & Windows media players & in both the footage is the same (flickering). I did the recording and playback onto the 32″ TV & the flicker was not noticeable at all which confuses me.
I then thought could it be my PC monitor. So I HDMI the PC tower up to the tv and played back some footage and the flicker returns.”Confusing for sure. To rule out your PC, can you try playing it back on another PC?

No ideas on that one. When you say “light change” do you mean colour temperature or exposure? Are both light sources the same (daylight, incandescent, etc.)?

I use a Mac and a NLE that requires my AVCHD files to be transcoded to ProRes 422 – you are using Premiere Pro which works with AVCHD files directly, so your import process should be okay – no issue there. Is it when you are playing the files in PP that you see the flicker? Have you tried playing the files in something else – like VLC player? Is it only in footage recorded in low light that you see this? Maybe it’s a light source thing like florescent lighting that’s causing the flicker. Let us know the results of recording and then playing back through HDMI into your TV.

Are your media files on an external 7200 rpm drive?… if not, they should be.

Given the fact that you will already need to rip files from DVD (use MPEG StreamClip – it’s free!), the cheapest and easiest way is to buy (or borrow – but they’re not that expensive) a standalone DVD recorder, plug in the output from your VHS player, record onto DVD discs, and then rip the files from those. This will accomplish two things – your client will have DVD copies of the original tapes, you will have the digital files you need to work from, and you will have a DVD recorder to use the next time someone asks you to do this kind of work (okay that’s three things). The external converter boxes others have mentioned will of course work as well but they may cost a bit more than a DVD recorder and you don’t end up with DVD copies of the original tapes to give to your client, who will probably be glad to have them.

Have you played the raw footage disc in a regular DVD player? If audio is there then I’m at a loss as to why you can’t hear it when you play the .vob files on your computer.

What are your sequence settings? Where are you playing the copied files from? (system or external drive?)
