Draw a spline the follows the profile of one half of a tear drop. Drop the spline into a lathe nurbs object.
If you dial back the angle on the lathe nurds to 180 degrees you’ll end up with a teardrop cross section. -
Motion tracking to pin the text to the background.

You can also work with proxies in AE to speed the work flow as well.
I’m out of the office for awhile. Once I get back at it and finishing up testing the sync I’ll let you know how it turns out.

I’m working on a couple projects that are similar to your project.
The first one is like the horizon project, item #1 on your list. I’m editing a single HD video (1920 x 1080) which I’ll move to AE and slice it into three 640 x 480 pieces. I’m still in the editing phase, but I think it’s going to work out well. Play out will be on three 4×3 screens.
The second project is syncing two BrightSign 210’s for HD playback on LCD panels. The hardware just came in on Thursday so I haven’t dug that deep into this project. I did have a chance to throw some of our HD video on the box and it looks great. My intent is to sync 2 units together over ethernet, no cpu. I don’t know if it would be possible to sync three 210’s together without a computer. If I find out more I’ll chime back in. Regarding the cheap HD players, I don’t know how you would sync the playback.
General thoughts on your project. Enough can’t be said about pre production and planning. It seems you’re already knee deep in pre planning now. Do some testing to get a feel for the work flow. Working with three HD streams edge to edge in AE may prove to be a painful experience. Creatively could you limit your pans to 2 screens and use the third screen for graphics? If you ran at it this way you be able to shoot with one HD camera and slice it into two (864 x 486) sections for the pans. 3 screens? 2 screens? HD? SD? However you decide to run at it you should handle the editing and visualization in the NLE first. Get it all nailed down as much as possible before moving to AE.
These kinds of projects are big fun if you don’t pull out all of your hair before you reach the finish line.

Add a layer mask to a layer.
Make a medium sized black box in the middle of the layer mask.
Open the Masks panel and select invert.
Your layer mask should now be a white box on a black background.
Adjust the feathering in the Masks panel.Hold the alt key and drag the mask to the layer above.
Repeat the duplicating of the mask as needed.
You can now tweak the feathering of each mask using the Masks panel.By default the mask and the layer should be linked. This means if you move and resize the layer the mask will follow.

Just google growing vines in AE and follow one of the many tutorials.

THe appliances below will encode for streaming and capture in a variety of formats, however I don’t think they’ll encode to MPEG – 1. Is MPEG-1 your only option?

Both companies offer less expensive options (cards) as well as high end solutions that will output multiple formats in real time. The right choice depends on the specific needs of the buyer.
