  • Thank you Herb & Dennis for the support. I expected to get some negative heat from the article. Overall the feedback has been more positive then I expected, with the majority of those chiming in agreeing with me more then not.

I will admit that some of my rant is frustration with Apple. Not for killing or not killing the Mac Pro, but for refusing to give professional editors who depend on their products for their livelihood better info.

I talk to these guys everyday. Many find themselves stuck. Not just on FCP7, but on their old reliable Mac Pro.

    • They see other NLEs, including FCPX, getting features and performance that they don’t have.
    • They see HP and Dell workstations that are more powerful and cost effective then their Mac Pro.
    • They see the new iMac being almost or as powerful as their Mac Pro, depending on what they own.
    • They see guys running Avid or Premiere on a DIY machine that cost less then $3K and handles any HD file format they throw at it.

They want to migrate to something, but they just don’t have enough information from Apple. I feel Apple is teasing/leading them on to keep them from jumping ship all the way. I will tell you that many editors and post facilities are migrating to or actively exploring migrating to PCs. Many are also integrating iMacs into their facilities/ edit suites.

I hope I’m wrong. I’d love to see a new Mac Pro in 2013. Or an expandable / upgradable iMac. I love the MacBook Pro w Retina for NLE. How cool would an iMac w/ Retina be? Imagine if it also allowed for easy access to add RAM, additional SSDs and a better GPU. An iMac Pro for lack of a better name. Who knows?

YES! I got my power back at home on Saturday. 12 days in the dark.

We never lost power at Videoguys. Or internet. Unfortunately our phones kept dropping out. We are now 100% operational.

Long Island really got creamed by the storm. The local power authority (LIPA) was not prepared and our infrastructure has not been properly maintained. Are you ready for this – they are still using COBOL on Mainframes to run the power grid!!!

Special thanks to all the crews that drove in from all over the midwest and east coast to help us out. It is greatly appreciated.

Avid is actually running 2 promotions. side by side, for $999

    1) Crossgrade to Media Composer for $999. This is aimed at the millions of FCP7 editors who have been abandoned by Apple. They can go to FCPX, Adobe , Avid or any other NLE. At $999 Avid is going back after these folks, who would not buy it for $1,499.

    2) Avid editors can upgrade to Symphony for $999. This is really a great offer because it goes back to Xpress DV, Xpress Pro, and any version of Avid Media Composer. The $999 Symphony upgrade includes Boris Contnuum Complete, worth over a thousand bucks itself. Symphony 6.5 is the same code base as Media Composer 6.5. It adds Symphony color correction tools and universal mastering. Universal mastering requires Nitris DX hardware.

For more info on these promos you can check out this email Videoguys sent out https://goo.gl/L3jNq

We hope to have an FAQ Guide posted shortly.

August 7, 2012 at 2:08 am in reply to: FCPX on MBP Retina Display – WOW

While waiting for my daughter to get her MacBook looked at by the Genius bar, I started playing around with FCPX on the MBP Retina. HOLY SMOKES! This thing flew. It was loaded up with some really great car racing footage and I just had a blast messing around with it. Handled fantastic, I found the display very easy to see and use even with my 49 year old eyes w/o glasses.

FCPX is not for everyone, but FCPX on MBP Retina is very impressive indeed. Apple’s just gonna keep making it better. I wish they could have had Adoobe CS6 and Avid on it as well. I’m sure they both also work great and deliver outstanding performance. The MBP w. Retina is on the top of my wish list 😉

On another note, I just updated the NLE Storage FAQ on the Videoguys website. SSD prices have fallen and we recommend going with an 256 or 512GB SSD. I’m a fan of the Crucial M series. You can check out the update here https://www.videoguys.com/Blog/E/Videoguys+NLE+Video+Storage+FAQ+Aug+2012+update/0xad4968cb52e4a9f2cdf2814f5e503c2c.aspx

If you’ve got an older Mac Pro or Mac Book, adding more RAM, an SSD boot drive and updated GPU can give new life and performance to it.

March 8, 2012 at 8:44 pm in reply to: Why Apple should let HP build its workstations

Ron – I agree with all your thoughts. I’d like to add a kicker that could help Apple & HP with this.

Have the HP Apple Workstations come pre-loaded with the latest ProApps. FCPX, Motion and Compressor. Everyone of them. Regardless of if the end user is going to run Adobe or Avid on it.

As we all know, if you give an editor a tool, he will use it. Or at least check it out and play with it. The HP workstation becomes a Trojan horse for the ProApps.

    Love this thread!!!

Tim is 100% correct. I spent may hours with Tim, before after and during the time he was at Avid singing the praises of Liquid. It was WAY ahead of it’s time. Avid gave it a great shot, but they never really had their heart in it. When they decided to make Media Composer a stand alone NLE that didn’t require any special hardware, it marked the end for Liquid. That said, there is a lot of Liquid technology inside MC now, under the hood.

As for Edius, it also is ahead of it’s time. While Avid and Adobe now brag about native format editing, it’s been in Edius for years. Even more important, Edius handles formats like AVCHD & DSLR footage much better on a less powerful machine. Edius gets more performance out of your computer.

Videoguys is selling Edius 6 crossgrades for $399.

Grass Valley just announced Edius 6.5 and it will include broad 3rd party hardware and plug-in support.
